If you dry burn titanium at too high a temperature for too long, it will form a very thick oxide layer that will flake off.

I don't want that in my juice, and of course, it also increases the resistance of the coil because there's less metallic titanium left. That said, the consensus is that it's OK to heat it to a temperature at which the oxide layer remains very thin, as indicated by a yellow or blue color.
