Let's say I have just missed my train and there is a one hour wait until the next one. There is nobody around but there is a CCTV camera on the platform. There is also a large sign saying 'No smoking. £100 fine.' Do I:

1. Get me vape out and puff away. I'm not smoking, so what's the problem?

2. Don't want to risk a confrontation so I take tiny puffs, hold my vape in as long as possible and try to stay out of view of the camera. If a member of staff says anything I'll apologise for my error and promise not to do it again.

3. Assume that by smoking they also mean vaping and that it's best not to indulge as I can't afford the fine.

I vote for option # 2. Be unobtrusive and remember: it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I live in Chicago, and I take the El Train. They have cameras everywhere and have passed laws that say that anywhere they have no smoking signs, you are not allowed to vape.

If nobody is around, I may sneak a vape or two if I'm exhausted after work and I happen to have my mod with me. Other than that I avoid it. I don't need to be hassled by anyone. Most of the time, I leave all my vaping gear in my car to avoid these issues.

Personally, I go for stealth until I see the train approaching the platform, at which point I fill my boots. I don't think I'm breaking any laws. Smoking in pubs in the UK is strictly banned these days unless you are in an outside designated zone. When I go out for a drink I always ask the bar staff if it's OK if I vape with my pint. Nine times out of ten they say 'No problem'. These are people who would risk losing their licence if they permitted smoking. To date nobody has ever complained, in fact the only reaction I've ever had is that, five or ten minutes after I've started puffing, a few other people will pull vapes from their pockets too.

Can they really fine you based on a video from a CCTV? Sure, the proper thing might be to go with #3, but if it were an open/outdoor platform otherwise unoccupied, #2. Which I have done on more than one occasion. But for an indoor platform/space, I would go with 3.
I'm with @Eskie.

By the law, you can vape unless there is a sign not to.
BUT, its just rude as hell, its just like starting to vape in a bus or something, thanks to this kind of crap many people don't like vapers. Its just immature and disrespectful to do such things. So yeah, vaping in places where smoking is forbidden is extremely rude.

I would vape discreetly ... if they tried to give me a ticket or fine me for vaping ... my full name is Bartholomew Simpson
