Star Scientific Plans Worldwide Marketing and Sales of CigRx(TM) Nutraceutical in Partnership with inVentiv Health PETERSBURG, Va., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Star Scientific, Inc. (Nasdaq: STSI) announced today that the company plans to introduce the CigRx(TM) nutraceutical product developed by its subsidiary, Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, for worldwide marketing and sales in partnership with inVentiv Health, Inc. (Nasdaq: VTIV). inVentiv Health offers a complete range of commercialization solutions for every stage of the product lifecycle, in a range of healthcare categories that includes nutraceutical products. The company has marketing and sales capabilities in 40 countries around the globe. Jonnie R. Williams, Star's CEO, stated, "Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the world. However, the global cigarette business, which now exceeds $300 billion, continues to grow. Our goal is to make CigRx(TM) available to adult smokers worldwide who wish to maintain a nicotine-free metabolism." Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals will be responsible for the manufacturing of CigRx(TM), and the company anticipates that inVentiv Health will be involved in the product marketing and sales, with a focus on product education for physicians and health care professionals, as well as consumers.
Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of CIGX, has isolated a naturally occurring alkoloid in tobacco called anatabine that is responsible for the calming, "feel good" effect cigarette smokers experience. CigRX is a patented nutraceutical product that will deliver this alkaloid. Obviously nicotine is addictive, but the fact that NRT products have minimal success in stopping smoking suggests that it there is another reason that smokers return to smoking; CigRX may well be the solution to this problem. The market for this application, and other immediate "off label" applications such as weight management, will be huge. And yes, treatment of other neurological conditions, such as Alzheimers, are being studied at Rock Creek.
One should not forget that CIGX just filed the first application with the FDA for a "modified risk" label on their patented hard dissolvable tobacco products, having reduced the dangerous nitrosamine levels to virtually "zero". If they don't receive the FDA modified risk label, arguably no one will. The licensing of this technology to the tobacco industry could be a game changer for the company by itself.
DVap, do you really believe that it can come down to just one single alkaloid? For years the thinking has been that it's the nicotine, and nicotine alone. We now know better. My feeling is that all those different components work in concert, somehow, and that picking one out, and leaving his brothers and sisters behind, cannot possibly succeed, or can it? How many times have we witnessed it with simple vitamins. Somebody discovers that people who eat foods high in vitamin A are protected from disease X; we isolate vitamin A, put it in a pill, and it not only doesn't work as well as was believed, it actually can become toxic--in higher doses and outside of its "natural habitat." We have evolved to consume whatever it is we consume in whole packages, as it comes in nature. Out ancestors ate grains, fruit and meat, not isolated molecules. They chewed coca leaves and sucked on poppy seeds and burned all kinds of fragrant sticks and twigs in order to inhale the smoke and hallucinate...
I wish them well. If I could take one little pill that could keep me calm and focused and sharp and relaxed, I'd buy a case. In the meantime, I'll play with my Thunder Frosted minis, my Stonewalls, and my batteries and cartomizers.
in another thread (), DVap postulated that ppl could be divided into 4 categories, based on their relative "need" for nicotine and "other stuff." the truth may very well be that there are many categories. if anatabine or anatabine+nic work to save even a subset of people from lung cancer, i'd call that a win.
i think it's premature to pass judgement here. this may work, it may not, or it may only work for some. at any rate, i think it's a move in the right direction, and i'm eager to see what happens next.

I view myself as the person who will continue to use their Stonewall dissolvable with 4mg nicotine AND the CigEx product with its alkaloid. Together, I might find the Holy Grail.
aheeeemmYou will continue to use CigEx? Is there something you haven't told us, Tropical Bob? Is it actually in your possession? Pray tell. The Holy Grail is what I'm after, too.
Where is Tropical Bob? We need guidance.![]()
