Some time ago, on an impulse I bought some tubes of UD wire shots - a tube of wire lengths cut to 6" lengths. This had to be more expensive than a spool, but they were on sale. They've been sitting in my box for a while and today I decided to give them a try.
These are Kanthal A1, 28ga X2 twisted. The coils in a Goon RDA on a single 18650 mech mod were overdue for replacement. I targeted a resistance of 0.55 ohms each, with 3mm dia coils, to end up at about 15 amps. the calculator came up with a 5/4 wrap. So I did. These coils looked tiny on the Goon, but I spread the wraps out to get them to fit on the wide clamp plates. Upon testing, they came out to 0.66 ohms each. This works out to 12.4 amps and 51 Watts. Close enough, plenty of safety factor.
This doesn't produce a cloud machine, but with the air flow turned down about halfway, the hit is slower and longer with good flavor and good satisfaction.
The best part is that I was able to make two coils with a single 6" length of wire!
So this is duly entered into my journal and will serve for future reference.
