...I am looking for a good quality (if such a thing) e-cig, that emits good vapor (I know the 510), and a decent to great "throat/lung hit"
I have looked in the following so far, and hope some responses are from users of these:
Green Smoke
Luci
Red Dragon
Dragon M401
Blu (whenever they get back in stock, who knows... 10 yrs maybe)
NJOY (Kinda looked cheap to me, and cartridges looked cheaply made)
Thanks for your replies , but if it has to come to it, I might try the 510, I prefer a 2 piece system w/ the atomizer built in the cart. Heard horror stories of crap atomizers. The screwdriver is out of the question (for now)
I couldn't believe that list of yours - virtually identical (other than the M401) to what my next-door neighbor had come up with prior to talking with me about it. I pretty much echo Tori's thoughts, other than the 401 (which, I believe, many ECF members use and enjoy).
I guess it's the extensive advertising/marketing those companies conduct that puts those products in your face as a non-initiate tries to find out about these "e-cigs" mentioned on the TV news. Fortunately, ECF (e-cigarette-forum) also places high on Google searches, so that you (and I) found our way here.
And this
is the place to be for good (albeit not
infallible) information, good fellowship, and advice. Take everything with a grain of salt. At least 99% of the posters are good folks, but we all (including me) can get caught up in our own enthusiasms and personal preferences.
Obviously (from the replies you've already received and throughout ECF) the 510 has become hugely popular and it
may be right for you. That is, for your
first device. I don't think I know of anyone who's been into this for a month or more who doesn't have at least
two different devices. From what I've heard about the 510, its only real weakness is the battery life (i.e., time between charges), but that PCC (portable charging case) helps prop that up. I've not tried the 510, so I'll comment no further on it.
The following are the units and vendors, with which I have had experience. I will be mentioning names and including links ... for your convenience, not because I get some kind of kickback (I don't).
I started with the KR808D-1 and,
if you
do want a
two-piece unit, you certainly should consider it. The vapor is good, strong throat hit, battery life is fair, but I didn't particularly like the taste of the prefilled cartomizers. And they do get expensive (although you can nurse them along by dripping into the battery end of the cartomizer). It's sold under myriad brand names, most of which are listed
here on the Mist-Stix site. I'll mention two, for two different reasons:
- The VaporKing is perhaps the best known (I guess it was one of the first). And we all owe a dept of gratitude to the vendor, Vapor4Life, for his participation in last week's NBC News story on e-cigs. Steve provided an effective counterbalance to the FDA report and hysteria.
- The Easy E-Cigarette from CigEasy because it is one of the least expensive and, therefore, was the vendor I used. [NOTE: Mist-Stix mentioned above has very low prices on cartomizers, but no longer sells batteries or starter kits.]
After two weeks, I moved on to the DSE801 (penstyle), which I don't think has brand names. It's long and elegant looking (IMO), smooth drawing, excellent vapor, but not much throat hit. I got my starter kit from Drew at
NHaler, a US vendor of KR808D-1's (and the similar, but different, Green Cig), who was getting rid of a supply of 801's (which he no longer carries). [BTW, he's one of the few sources for 48mg unflavored PG (for cutting only, please), if you decide to get into DIY (as I have).]
The Chinese may be your best source (certainly price-wise) for 801 kits and parts, e.g.,
Ruyan Direct (which also has super prices on e-liquid) and
BestEcig. BestEcig actually sells their own BE112 penstyle, which others here have said is fully compatible with (and better than?) the 801. The RN4072 is another 801 clone, with which I have no experience (I
think, sometimes you're not sure which of those two you're getting). The other penstyle I know of (but have no experience with) is the M201. I've heard good things about it, but it is
not compatible with the 801 (or with devices, to which you may graduate that are 801 compatible).
My most recent (and final?)
acquisition is the Prodigy from
PureSmoker. Based on your comments about the Screwdriver, you're probably not
yet open to this one. Looking into my crystal ball, however, I predict that you
will be. The high-voltage fat boys (as I call them) are the
ultimate vaping experience (at this time). [Actually, this is rivaled by the very good passthroughs, e.g., Puresmoker's, but those have limited mobility.] The reason I splurged $140 of my (very limited) budget was I was sick of charging batteries every hour. Well the Prodigy has solved that ... and delivers much more throat hit and even more vapor.
I know that the Prodigy and its kin look
nothing like an analog cigarette. Those of us who use them just don't care. In fact, not being mistaken for a cigarette smoker can have its advantages.
Take in all of the comments you've received on this thread (and throughout ECF) ... view them in light of your lifestyle and personal preferences (and budget) ... and choose what is best for you. It almost certainly won't be your last vaping purchase. You just want it to be a pleasant one.
From a cold-blooded, planning for the future point of view, I suggest the 901 (with which I have no experience), the 801 (which I still love), or the 510 (which is so wildly popular today) -
because their atomizers can all be used with the Prodigy

(and, I believe, most of the other fat boys).
I hope you enjoy your adventure in vaping even half as much as I am enjoying mine!
