Hi all,

First post (obviously) and I could really use some help. I did some lurking before I registered but it's like learning another language. There are so many options and abbreviations that I'm totally lost. If someone wouldn't mind giving me some reliable non scam links to quit, I would be most appreciative!

Basically it's like this:

I WANT to quit smoking.
I have smoked for almost 27 years. (okay just doing the math on that was a WAKEUP!!!)
I quit when pregnant but picked it up within two years after.
I smoke Marlboro 100's.
I usually smoke a pack a day; more if I'm drinking.
I WANT to quit smoking.
I don't understand any of the jargon.
But I'm willing to learn.
I would like to try a GOOD "sample" e-cig without spending a ton of money.
But I understand my health is worth it.
But I don't have the resources to spend a fortune on something along with cigs to find it doesn't work.
I WANT to quit smoking.
I hate smelling like cigarettes.
My kids LOATH it.
I LOATH it.
I WANT to quit smoking.
I'm tired of trying to cough my lungs out.
I'm tired of not being able to do any sports or activities.
I'm tired of taking "smoke breaks".
I WANT to quit smoking.
I WANT to quit smoking.
I WANT TO QUIT SMOKING!!!
And every time I've tried; I've failed.
I don't want to fail anymore.
I understand that it takes trial and error.

If anyone has read this missive, can you recommend a good starter kit? Being in Cali, I have a multitude of "smoke shops" locally, are those good places to "test drive" a product?

Basically...HELP!

THANKS!

J

You came to the right place! I was in exactly your shoes as of a few weeks ago, and now I'm a vaping madman who hasn't picked up a cigarette in over a week, and I don't even miss it.

Go with an eGo for a starter kit:
joye ego kit

Order yourself some sample juices from here:
Vapor Station

It will all be much clearer once you get that going!

BTW, it's my opinion that if you start out with something cheap and disposable without a choice of flavors, you might find it a less than satisfying experience - you might as well get good stuff that will encourage you and get you on a path away from cigarettes, rather than turn you off of the idea with something cheap....You'll barely spend more than you would on a carton of cigarettes to get started, and if you stick with it, you'll save a ton of money in a very short amount of time...

First, welcome to ECF. I don't think you could have found a better place to seek help. Starting here might be helpful, Mistress Nomad really breaks it down: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-videos-newbies-particular-broke-newbies.html

I started with a Joye 510 and really love it. The only issue I had was I had to change the battery every few hours. I later got a Riva 510 kit from Liberty Flights. It's basically the same technology, just a bigger battery - They have it for $30.00 after using the 20% off link on the top left of their website.

If you want a tobacco flavor I can recommend the C&D (Cowboy & Death, AKA Marlboro) flavor from avejuice.com. I smoked Lights/100s/Red (mostly Lights though). It will not taste like burning tobacco, but does have a tobacco flavor reminiscent of a cigarette. As suggested, I would try other flavors too. Some great juice vendors I have used: vaperite, avejuice, vaporbomb, johnson creek, gourmet vapor. (You should check out the e-liquid Discussion section too for more ideas.)

I agree with jplanet that the eGo or Riva 510 is a good starter PV (personal vaporizer). (most of us have 3 or more different PV's) Get an extra atomizer and get 2-3 bottles of e-liquid and some blank carts so you can re-fill your carts with e-liquid. I also smoked Marlboros and based on how you smoked, I STRONGLY suggest you start out at 24mg nicotine strength liquid. If you get it too low to start out, you will have a hard time making the transition. You will be hard pressed to find an e-liquid that tastes just like a Marlboro. The closest I have found is Liberty Flights "Home Counties" flavor e-liquid. I think they also have a good price on a Riva/eGo 510 kit. Here is their web site: Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Joye eGo

Their eGo's are $49 before the discount. Make sure you click on the 20% off button to get the discount. Their shipping is quick and reasonable. I would suggest you start out with some of their 5ml bottles of liquid and try different flavors in the 24mg nicotine strength.

Good Luck

Welcome yeah you stumbled across a great place here I'm still fairly new myself but this is the place that helped me decide on picking up an ego which I've absolutely loved and after a rough first couple of mornings the craving went away and I haven't looked back I'll never go back to the analogs again and had I known what a difference it would make in my life I'd have done it a lot sooner. I can smell things better, taste things better, my breathing and sleeping have improved, I have more energy now I've been recommending this to everyone I know who smokes now lol.

CaliChic ..Welcome to ECF..you can easily get confused trying to learn here becuase there is so much info..
my sugestion is to get a disposable at a 711 or smoke shop just to try...you WON'T like it
but you will have spent only a small amount of money to find out what the cheapies offer
Now go to liberty-flights.com , clik 'shop' then 'riva 510' and read all about them
they still have a bunch in stock, get your 20% discount and add some juice
you'll have a good long lasting and satisfiying ecig at a good price..
good luck and hopefully happy vaping :+)

Hi Calichic

Like you I was a pack a day + some marb smoker. I started with the 510 Riva kit as I wasn't thrilled with having to switch batteries every couple of hours. I tried a couple of tobacco type juices and personally hated them. I pretty much use fruit flavors and am loving every minute of it. Been cigarette (analog) free for 3 months now and have never felt better. I can smell a smoker 100 ft away now too..

Wow :)

Thanks for all the quick help and encouragement! I still don't understand the "juice" thing but I'll explore further.

I *think* I would be best served with riva 510, 24 nic strength and there is a 20% discount?

Is there a link I missed or should I just Google?

Question? Is it counter indicated to combine e-cigs with nicorette? Okay THAT was a dumb question, let me rephrase ...If I have 4 mg gum available, what should I order for an e-cig strength? Or do most find themselves more successful in quitting not using the gum and just the e-cig?

And ECC? Um?? *Blink*

Here's a link to the 510 Riva's Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510
The juice is the liquid that you put in the carts to vape. I bought the Lite kit that ends up being $29.99 with the discount. Be sure to click on the 20% discount banner at the top left hand corner. They also sell the liquid juices, I would suggest getting at least 5 5ml flavors to start with but most people go through about 3 ml/day on average so it will last a couple of weeks while you try them out.If you smoked the full flavors I think the 24mg is a good starting point. I am at 18mg myself at the moment but that is because I chain vape and the 24 was a bit too much. I was getting a bit dizzy using it I would also suggest getting some non tobacco flavors to try in the mix. Feel free to pm me if you have questions. I would be more than happy to help.

Yes you can use the gum at the same time, nothing to worry about there.

The "juice" thing is the liquid we vaporize in our personal vaporizer (e-cig). If you go to Liberty Flights they just have an image in the upper left of the page you have to click on to get their 20% discount. It's not the e-cig that comes in different strengths, that's the juice.

I haven't used the gum (I have in the past) with my e-cig. The strength for the liquid required from person to person to keep the cravings at bay is really varied. I got a few different strengths and small sample bottles to start. I got 12, 18, and 24mg. Started with 24, but quickly went to 18 - others started at 36.

Hi CaliChick,
Welcome!
Hope can be a scary thing, eh?
You are in the right place. And don't be shy about asking questions, they built a New Member forum for people just like us. These people are great and they know their stuff.

You're doing a good thing. Follow through and find your "sweet spot" as they say, and the rest comes naturally.

Best of luck to you. Come back and let us know how things progress?

Again, thanks SO much!

It's obvious I need to learn more. I thought there were these pre-loaded cartridges and that was that. From what I have read and y'all have told me, there is a liquid "juice" (sorry, don't know what else to call it) that you soak them in? Yeah J, go read more lol!

Carrie M - Many thanks for the link :)

Phreaker - Did not mean to offend. I have no clue what "juice" is. But thanks for the heads up on the gum :D

No offense taken, just passing on information. e-liquid, juice, it's all the same thing... :)

You can buy pre-filled cartridges or even cartomizers (cartridge and atomizer in one unit), but you'll probably want to be able to refill them.
