Most popular starter PVs here and their [most popular fat battery models]

510 (most popular and most flexible) [Ego or Riva 510]
KR808D-1 (cartomizer model aka Vapor King at Vapor4Life) [Elegant Easy at CigEasy]
DSE901 (softer airier hit) [Riva 901]

Of those 3, in their slim (slightly fatter than a cig) 120mm (approx) long basic models, the 510 and 901 have the shortest battery life. The slim versions of all three cannot use more powerful LR (low resistance) attachments like atomizers and cartomizers because their batteries are not up to providing the higher amount of power needed. In their fat battery versions, the battery charge should last 3-4x longer and the LR parts can also be used (though that shortens battery life somewhat)

I think your main choices would be KR808D-1 or 510 versions depending on whether you have an interest in prefilled cartomizers. KR808D-1 has a lot of prefilled cartomizers available as well as blank ones. 510 is a cartridge+atomizer unit and has a variety of blank cartomizers available. Since prefilled cartomizers need to be refilled to make economic sense, it's not that big of a factor whether they are prefilled because unless you have a fat wallet you are going to refill them anyway and get as many uses as you can out of each.

I think the Ego or Riva 510 suggestion is a good one. That way you can try carts, you can try cartos (fill your own) and get a good idea of what you like.

I noticed you want to try a sample ecig. You can get a 510 disposable at LiteCigUSA.net for $10

It may be a bit weaker than a normal 510 and the parts are not compatible (may be different voltage or tolerances)

Note - the prefilled carts that come with it will probably have eh PG juice in them. LiteCigUSA has some "High Caliber" 70pg/30vg liquids - I am not familiar with these liquids but at least they are a common blend (70/30) and not the Chinese PG which you will already have in your prefilled carts. And they have some tobacco flavors
High Caliber E-Liquid | High Caliber E Cigarette Liquid Selection from LiteCigUSA!
And their disposable 510 is here
Disposable E Cigarette & Disposable Cigarette Filters | Disposable Eletronic Cigarette Refill Cartrdiges at LiteCigUSA
And their shipping is cheap

Don't judge it by the juices. There are so many juices available.

I was where you are at two years ago. I smoked for over 20 years - Marlboro Red 100's for the most part. That hope you are feeling right now is real. These PV's do work.

I had some equipment failure last year and started smoking again. I ended up buying the eGo and the right juice. It worked for me. I have no desire to smoke.

You've received some great advice in this thread. My advice is to take some time and research before you buy. Don't buy from the mall, the smoke shop, the radio, the TV as you will probably be disappointed.

If you want to just get started right away, I recommend the eGo. Buy several extra atomizers so you don't end up buying a pack of smokes while you wait for a replacement. Also, one thing I remember as a noob is that I wanted tobacco flavors. I could not understand why people would smoke fruity flavors. I quickly learned that the tobacco flavors tasted like yuk to me and that people weren't smoking they were vaping. Buy a few different kinds of juice so if you end up not liking one, you still have something else to try.

I hope you are successful with this quit.

Cali,
Another cali girl here too. I just started doing this a few weeks ago. Had someone pointed me to an odd looking contraption and told me I had to fill it myself, I would have said fergitit. I liked having the familiar look/feel/size of a cigarette at first. And prefilled cartridges ready to pop on and go. And I found just that at V4L (click signature below). Personally, I bought just 1 automatic Vapor King battery, 1 USB charger, and 1 pack of cartridges. Was cheaper than a whole kit so I could see if I liked it or not. And I did! Immediate returned for more loot. The Vapor King (aka KR808-d1) is a popular choice for an introduction. Nice variety of flavors too.

I've been vaping coming up for two years now. I started on a "cig lookalike" but quickly switched to a device with a much bigger battery. Nowadays, noobs are lucky as there are good starter devices like the Riva and eGo which acually work well and have decent battery life between charges. I recommend starting with one of those.

Don't worry about all the numbers people keep quoting - they all refer to the bit of an e-cig that does the heating up of the liquid. An e-cig is basically just a battery attached to something that heats up liquid! If you buy a Riva or eGo you can always change to a different number "heater" (atomiser or cartomiser) later by buying an adapter for a few bucks.

First thing i would do is follow the link as stated above and watch the videos, it will get you up to speed fairly quickly.
First, welcome to ECF. I don't think you could have found a better place to seek help. Starting here might be helpful, Mistress Nomad really breaks it down: I made videos for newbies! In particular, broke newbies...

Hi CaliChic,

Let me share some of my experiences. First, welcome! You found the right place and spend a little time reading (I'm sure you already have) and the jargon will melt away. Second, vaping ain't like smoking but it is close. Whatever you choose for equipment (lots of good recommendations already), it is going to take you a couple of days to work out the kinks and get everything working to your satisfaction so be patient.

Third, go with a "very high" nicotine dose to start--24 to 30 mg/ml (milligrams per milliliter). What is advertised as a high dose (18mg/ml) isn't. After a couple of weeks you can cut it back if that suits you. You will get the occasional urge for an analog (tobacco cigarette) once you go 100% e-cig. Don't cave, just chain vape till it passes. I only had that happen 2 or 3 times in 2 months and I was a 2 pack a day (PAD) smoker. Your mileage may vary (YMMV).

Forth, nothing tastes like an analog so don't try too hard to find it. Just embrace all the other flavors out there that taste tons better than an analog.

Good luck and let us know how it's going!

Hi Cali and Welcome.

I started 3 weeks ago with a cig looking thing from a company in Fremont, CA. It was ok but the battery needed to be charged constantly. After hours of reading forum reviews I ordered an ego. The batteries last all day! I smoked for over 35 years but haven't had or wanted a cig in over 2 weeks. It works! I feel better, no withdrawls yet, and my non-smoker wife is happy with the switch. If you go with the ego get plenty of juice, I went thru 15ml and all the carts in a week. I recently got some Boge cartomizers which hold about 1ml of juice, less time spent filling=more vaping. Nothing tastes like a cig, juice tastes better, so don't be afraid to try things that sound odd. I got some fennel which tastes like black licorish and is very satisfying. Good luck and have fun with it.

Welcome to ECF and information overload!! :)

For some of the jargon, the references to 510, KR808, 410, etc, these reference the
actual threads on the ends of the batteries and atty (atomiser) or carto (cartomiser).

If the numbers match, they will screw together, many suppliers will have kits with
exotic names but all will fall into one catagory or another by the thread number.

Batteries are rated by the mAh, such as 650mAh, 900mAh, the bigger the number
the longer they last between charges.

All e-cigs are 2 or 3 piece, battery and carto OR battery atty and cart, these are
a personal preference and everybody has their own favorite way to go

Sit back relax, watch some of the videos from the stickys on the top of the New
Members section, it will allow you to see an e-cig in action, in a persons hand,
easy to judge the sizes and shapes. Most pictures of PV / e-cig alone give you
no size reference and often look much bigger than they actually are!!

Hi all,

Thank again for all the advice and help! Y'all are very good at breaking things down into an understandable language for a newbie :D It's like a whole new culture.

So, I went ahead and bought a cheapo disposable at the local smoke shop and watched a bunch of videos. Yeah, BIG difference in the mom and pop carried one offs vs. the products and kits found online. But I did very much enjoy it (and the inevitable benefits) so I'm going to take the plunge and order the real deal online tonight.

Here is where I need (more) help. I'm torn between the Riva 510 and the and Joye EGO 510.

Am I correct in that both take the juice? The only real difference I can see between the two is one is manual with a smaller battery (the EJOY), not a fan of those features). I'm thinking the Riva 510, anextra atomizer, 2-3 bottles of juice and a low resistance atomizer is a good start?

I understand no one else can decide what is going to be best for me but does this sound reasonable? Thoughts?

Thanks :)

Hi all,

First post (obviously) and I could really use some help. I did some lurking before I registered but it's like learning another language. There are so many options and abbreviations that I'm totally lost. If someone wouldn't mind giving me some reliable non scam links to quit, I would be most appreciative!

Basically it's like this:

I WANT to quit smoking.
I have smoked for almost 27 years. (okay just doing the math on that was a WAKEUP!!!)
I quit when pregnant but picked it up within two years after.
I smoke Marlboro 100's.
I usually smoke a pack a day; more if I'm drinking.
I WANT to quit smoking.
I don't understand any of the jargon.
But I'm willing to learn.
I would like to try a GOOD "sample" e-cig without spending a ton of money.
But I understand my health is worth it.
But I don't have the resources to spend a fortune on something along with cigs to find it doesn't work.
I WANT to quit smoking.
I hate smelling like cigarettes.
My kids LOATH it.
I LOATH it.
I WANT to quit smoking.
I'm tired of trying to cough my lungs out.
I'm tired of not being able to do any sports or activities.
I'm tired of taking "smoke breaks".
I WANT to quit smoking.
I WANT to quit smoking.
I WANT TO QUIT SMOKING!!!
And every time I've tried; I've failed.
I don't want to fail anymore.
I understand that it takes trial and error.

If anyone has read this missive, can you recommend a good starter kit? Being in Cali, I have a multitude of "smoke shops" locally, are those good places to "test drive" a product?

Basically...HELP!

THANKS!

J
As some people already said, you have definitely came to the right place, these forums are amazing, and answer ridiculously quick any questions you may have. I was in the same place, it's overwhelming, reminds me of when I first started playing World of Warcraft to be honest. Lingo is like another language. What the hell is an atty?? There is a difference between a carto and a cart?? I've been on the forums for a few weeks doing hours of research and am still learning new things everyday! Good luck!

Congratulations! Let us know when your shipment comes in and we can help you through the awkward period.

Also: you really, REALLY should watch this:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-videos-newbies-particular-broke-newbies.html

Plus, youtube is your friend. If you goto youtube you can see demonstrations on all sorts of things; how to refill carts and cartomizers, how to clean your atomizer, how to mix your own juice (if you choose to), just about anything. I know youtube helped me out a lot because it's hard to picture most of what you hear about here, it's just easier if you can see it in action.

Yep, YouTube was a HUGE help in seeing the differences in styles, sizes, etc.

My only concern is when my order confirmation came up it showed the UK. Not sure if this is normal or if I didn't remember to cling the USA flag *bangs head). I immediately e-mailed customer service but still no reply. Fingers crossed if I did screw uop and order from the UK side they can convert it to the USA site!
