different flavors require different percentages

most flavor totals can run between 10 to 20 percent (really complex blends may go as high 30%)

coffees, chocolates and some fruits need to stay 5% or less (most coffees for my liking are at 1-3%)

smell test that will let you know how strong of flavor it is - take your bottle of flavor concentrate and hold it at arms length, if you can smell it at that distance, go very small amounts - 1 to 3 percent, try it again at about a foot distance - 3-12 percent, nose over the bottle 10 - 20 percent - if any "perfumey" smell, you will want to let your mix steep cap off for a day or two after mixing

make sure you read the stickies in the DIY subforum and understand all of the safety protocols when working with high mg nic base (simplest is to mix high nic (60-100) down to 36mg for your base nic to experiment with mixing)

make sure there are no distractions when mixing ie: kids, spouse, pets, phone, etc.
mix over hard, easy to clean surfaces (no carpets is what I actually mean)
dropper measuring is not that accurate, using syringes with ml markings work best (get enough so you have a clean one available for each flavor you are going to mix with each session ie: if you are going to blend 5 different flavor concentrates than you want at least 5 syringes and blunt needles -
catheter syringes work best for VG
make small test batches (5-10ml) with no nic when you are just experimenting - adding nic will not change the flavor drastically

use mixing calculator program

write down ALL mixes so you can duplicate the good ones and avoid redoing the bad ones (I keep a separate page with just the flavor characteristics and best mix percentages for easy reference)

hope this helps

Im new to this forum. I am also new to creating my own flavors. I have some great ideas for "specialty/gourmet" flavors, but im not sure what % to mix. say there is a blend of three flavors should they total 20%? is that too much? a little help please!!!

Welcome to this new world. When you can, join us over at the DIY subforum. You will find many answers to your questions as well as be able to help others work through their (our) "mixin".

i use higher % on my mixes for my own taste, each person can be different, if your just starting out i would keep my flavors simple as possible.....make 3 to 5 different %'s in small 10ml or smaller batches to start with.
then store for a week or so shaking daily, then try them keep the percentage that taste best to you and then you can run w/it. (write down and keep track of everything).
here is a simple Calculator to use..if your base is already mixed put a zero in the 'Target Nicotine Level"
eJuice Recipe Calculator

just hit the enter key on your keyboard after configuring.......after you get it down you can Google for a more thorough E-Juice Calculator...good luck to ya

One reason this might be is because vape shops tend to have a set PG/VG amount they use for all their flavors. For example, 80/20 of PG/VG or 60/40. They also have the different levels of nicotine mixed in with the PG and VG. If this is the case, which it might not be, then that would mean that the PG, VG, and nicotine are already steeped, so when you add that mixture to the flavoring, there's less acclamation taking place. So, instead of having the PG, VG, nicotine, and the flavoring mixed at the time of purchase, which would require all those elements to blend and marry well, you can treat the premixed PG, VG, and nicotine as one liquid versus three. Try it yourself to see if it makes a difference. You can use your own ratio of PG/VG and nicotine and mix it and allow to steep and then add flavoring after it's steeped and then compare it to the same ratio of PG/VG and nicotine by mixing all of the components individually. Hope this helps.
