Pear---why does TFA Pear smell like fingernail polish remover? Is it me?

No, it's not just you. I can tell you it is VERY hard to get a decent pear flavor. The TFA pear doesn't make it any easier. I think small percentage is the way to go. I use less than 3% and always as an add-on. If you try it and like what you get, please share?

I know it's lazy, but I'm looking for a Virginia fire cured tobacco Recipe. I can buy the concentrate from wizards, but thought I'd ask. Can only get the concentrate at 8ml bottles, lol. Would like to find a bigger amount if anyone knows? Thanx

I really like Wizard's prices and quality. I thought the same before about the small bottles and checked all the places I used to buy from. What I found was that I could get 4 bottles from Wizard (32 ml) for less than other suppliers wanted for 30 mls. I haven't tried but someone posted a while back that you could email Wizard and request larger bottles of flavoring.

"Infinite Sunrise"...

Watermelon 9%
Blueberry Wild 7%
Raspberry 4%
Lemon Lime 1.7 %
Ethyl Maltol 1.2 %
Koolada 2%
Menthol (from crystals) 5%-7%

And oh yes, it's good. :)

As per WL, Recommended usage is a 10% solution consisting of 1 gram menthol crystals to 10ml Propylene Glycol or Ethyl Alcohol. How did you dilute yours? I do not have a gram scale!

Honestly, I had no idea about recommended usage for 10% solution, but now that you've informed me, and I have a jewelry scale, I will use that method from now on.

What I do is fill a 30 ml bottle with PG until it is about 80% full. Then I crush up some menthol crystals in a mortar with a pestle. I use a funnel to add the menthol crystals to the bottle. I cap it, shake it, then place it in a hot water bath for a few minutes. I then continue adding crushed menthol crystals, shaking, putting in a hot water bath, until when I taste a bit, it tastes very very strong. Then I top the bottle off with PG, which doesn't really require that much, shake it one last time, one last hot water bath, then it's done. Not very scientific but it works.

As long as the menthol is good and strong, it's good to go.

When you weigh out a gram could you please see if it is a Tsp. or some other measure that those of us who don't have scales could use. Or maybe X grams per Tsp. I have a shot glass that has Tsp. measurements that I got from Walmart.

Thanks.

Paddy, a standard set of measuring spoons has 1/4, 1/2 and 1 teaspoon measures in it. You can be fairly accurate by loading the spoon then leveling it off with a flat edge, like the back of a knife.

Thanks awsum but first I need to know how many grams per tsp. After doing several searches here and on the net I find that there are as many ways to mix menthol as those mixing. Some are 50/50, using measuring spoons. Others are x% liquid of a Xml bottle, then keep adding crystals until full, etc.

Bottom line for me is to have a consistent method that can be duplicated by others. At least with the WL recommendation of "10% solution consisting of 1 gram menthol crystals to 10ml Propylene Glycol or Ethyl Alcohol", it then becomes what % of menthol liquid ( from crystal ) to use in a particular recipe. Therefore I would like to know the gram:tsp. ratio.

I know I am being "Type A" here, but, the whole point for me is to be able to replicate any given recipe. Of course if you are using TFA's Menthol Liquid, it speaks for its self.

EDIT: Of course for the gram:tsp. ratio to be meaningful requires the Menthol to be "crush up some menthol crystals in a mortar with a pestle". Other wise the crystals are not of uniform shape and size.

grams per tsp is going to be hard, depends on powder/crystal shape and uniformity, and density due to moisture too.

If you want I can try to weigh for you, I have digital scales and tsp as well as 1/4 tsp spoons. I do not have a mortar/pestel though, I'd have to crush between two spoons or in a bowl, ect :(

I guess it could be a close approximation anyway, let me know if you want me to see what I come up with

Cabela's or any chain sporting goods store will have inexpensive gram scale designed for weighing/measuring gun powder. I'll bet Amazon has 'em, too.

Don't unless you are making a batch anyway.

I'll check out Walmart next time I'm in town. Don't believe I've seen a Sporting Goods store in town.
