Tried quite a few juices, all harsh to my throat and causing me to cough after ~3 puffs, what's wrong?

It could be the nic, or sensativity to pg or vg. I would change the nic level first, anything above 12 would make me cough like crazy, then I would get a minor throat irritation from certain juices, went to 50/50 blend, apparently it is a very slight sensativity to pg. It could also be your draw, if I draw to long or hard I would cough, slow steady draws I didn't. You may need to experiment a little more, but only change up one thing at a time so you can narrow it down.

I've never actually had that problem myself, main issue I had when I started vaping was to little throat hit, lol... I have a friend though that cuts his juices with distilled water and VG, he claims that it weakens the throat hit. Another thing you can try is lowering the power(wattage) by reducing the voltage or upping the resistance. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread because I've got more then a few friends who still smoke and when they try my PV they cough like crazy too, lol. Let me know if any of those things work for you and sorry I couldn't be of more help, happy vaping!

Hi Nav & welcome. If I could suggest getting some plain vg & adding it to your juice, you'd be cutting both the nic level & the pg. I found that I'm sensitive to both of them & wound up w/a very sore throat along w/various other signs that something wasn't right. I'm doing alot of DIY, however, there are several juices that I have fallen in love with & doctor them with my own potion - works out great. Good luck to you & vape on!

Is it the nic, PG or VG in it that I am sensitive to? I have tried juices with nic level 18mg, 12mg, 8mg and diluted the juice with VG etc. I know I need to experiment a bit more and maybe mixing my own juices. Any tips may make my life easier.

I am using ego-v6, ego-vv, ego-c with ce6, ce4 and ego-c carts.

This makes virtually no sense (I don't mean that you don't make sense)... I just have never heard of someone trying all these combinations and still always getting harsh hits.

Harsh hits come from poor atomization. That happens when:
1) Ohms and voltage are mismatched.
2) Atty/carto is gunked up.
3) Atty/carto is too dry or too wet (flooded).
4) Nic and, to a lesser extent, PG add TH

Also could be
5) Sensitivities I guess.

So if you can eliminate most the the above, do the DIY thing like you have already suggested and eliminate one ingredient at a time. You'll have to have both PG and VG nic bases to pull that off, as well as plain PG and VG along with a flavoring.

Maybe try a standard atomizer on the eGo-vv and dripping. Eliminates a lot of variables. Don't get a "special" dripping atty or anything. A normal "standard" 510 atty will work for this.

Also remember to blow the primer out.

Keep us posted!

Wow! Thanks a lot everybody. I just bought pure PG, VG and DW. Some super concentrated flavoring and low nic juice are on their way. I did try the carts and the ego-c tanks / ato combinations and I did not feel too much of a difference. I have not experimented with higher voltages yet. All my carts / atos are the regular resistance ~2.5 Ohm. Based on my notes, I only diluted the 18mg juice with VG and I did not dilute it too much (by ~40% I think). So the nic level may still be too high for me.

Based on all the recommendations, I am thinking to try things out like this:

1) pure PG
2) pure VG
3) dilute the juices I have using VG/DW and lower the nic level to around and below 6mg
4) adjust level of juice in carto/tank
5) and eventually add flavoring ...
6) use a new cats/tank every time for now (an ultrasonic cleaner is on its way too)

Will report my findings.

My first thoughts are "How do you inhale the Vapour"?

Some smokers direct inhale if you are one of those then you may get a sore throat.
Vaping is different to smoking. Inhale into your mouth and hold it for a second then inhale you will find this better to get the nicotine into your system and less harsh on your throat.

I can't find the link to give you the post about how to inhale vapour, hopefully one of the veterans can point it out to you.

Hi Nav and welcome to ECF,

Ok you mentioned you tried diluting the juice with vg, but you never said what the pv/vg was, and how much you tried cutting it, I agree with Flyer on the 50/50 being smoother. Not to say I don't like the 70/30 I have, but it did take me a couple days to adjust too after having only had 50/50.

Also are you making sure you are staying hydrated, and are you using proper inhalation technique, I know it may seem silly to have to learn how to inhale, but inhaling vaper is more like smoking a pipe then a cig, and it can make a world of difference in how it hits you.

Thanks all!

I did read the "how to inhale" thread and I believe that's how I do it, very slowly into mouth and then inhale.

By "harsh" I meant it's really something similar for me to smoke a cigar and then something else. I have to stop after ~3 inhale.

I have just tried pure PG and VG. They are both smooth and have basically no taste. So, it has to be the nic level I guess.

I smoke 12mg analog, about half pack a day. So I thought I could handle ~12mg juice.

Will experiment with nic level soon.

Pg has been known to be harsh for some vapers. Some. like myself, also have a sensitivity to some flavors. Realize vaping is very dehydrating and can ruin the vaping experience. I drink 1 1/2 liters of water per day. Realize also PG coats the throat and mouth area. I rinse/ gargle once per day with fresh squeezed lemon and water.
Good Luck.

I do a gargle with peroxide twice a day. My friend is a dentist and he recommends this to help with gum health and teeth whitening. Also helps clear the pgness from my tongue and throat.

While the nic level is what causes the th, the pg helps bring it out while the vg mutes it. So you said you tried pure pg and vg, have you tried the vg with the nic?

I have not tried vg with nic. I have not ordered nic only or nic base. Thought I could just use the juice and pg/vg/flavor to find out right combinations.

So far the juices I have ordered never specified or indicated pg/cg ratio, only nic level. Definitely will pay attention or choose the pg/vg ratio in my next order.

If you just switched over to vaping, this can be a general short-term reaction. I had this along with a very sore throat for a few days about a week after I switched over. It was quite annoying, but went away in a few days. French inhaling got me through it. "softer" tasting flavors helped as well.
I still have occasional short-term problems with various flavorings (cinnamon in particular), but they go away in a couple hours.
