I had cell phone issues while it was still under warranty. The way it was handled was as follows:
They took my credit card info and put a hold on it for the amount of a new phone
They sent me a new phone and a return label
They had me send the old phone in the box the new one came in
If they found it was my fault, ie dropped in water, they'd charge my card
If it was defective, hold lifted and case closed
My phone was in fact defective, and the hold was released. Maybe Halo (and others) should adopt this policy. Granted, Motorola has a lot more money than probably all of these companies combined, but that's a good compromise IMO.
Perhaps if they find the battery isn't defective after they get it, they can send it back to you for the cost of shipping (you've already paid for the new one and it's shipping).
