Peacocks do not have any colored pigments to give them their amazing colors; the colors come from light reflecting off their transparent feathers. Researchers found that the feathers' bright colors are produced by intricate 2D crystal-like structures. Slight alterations in the spacing of these microscopic structures cause different wavelengths of light to be filtered and reflected, creating the feathers' many iridescent hues.
The smallest inhabited Hawaiian Island, Ni‘ihau, is owned by two brothers that inherited from their family who purchased it from King Kamehameha V for $10,000 in 1864. They have turned down all offers to sell it including $1 billion from the U.S. government.
