Mac, Mac, Mac... you're incorrigible.

I think you might be a little late to rename "trolls". It's been in use for years now, the shipped has sailed on that one.

I personally take the word troll seriously. I only connect "troll" with people who are deliberately trying to cause trouble, or game people. I don't consider you a troll. You're not trying to affect others, you're just being yourself.

It would be nice if people stopped throwing around the word "troll" whenever they don't like someone else's opinion, but again, I haven't seen that much around here. And let's face it, we all can tell where it's gonna happen, and which threads are better viewed as a spectator rather than a participant. When someone starts throwing around that word loosely, I always wonder if they're the troll themselves.

I reiterate my hands-off policy for questionable posts and posters. It's the only way to be sure.

You guys don't really know what you are talking about... I can't believe all of the misinformation that is being passed around about such an EASY term... IF one can't see it, then I would have to say that one is blind. All I can say up to this point.. NOTHING has benefited the OP's thread...

If everyones completely wrong why don't you just give us the correct definition of an Internet Troll, because after my post I looked it up and this is the correct definition:

"One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument"

I think of a troll as someone who intentional causes a fight among members. People are going to disagree with each other and that's fine. As long as there is evidence to support claims. But when someone flames another or it begins to get personal... it's trolling.

If the person "fought" back at a flame, would that make both parties a troll?

hmmm... hard to say, If the person fighting back is doing it in a genuine way without added more fuel to the fire, then no. But if the defender loses their cool and begins flaming back, then yes.

No one should ever be attacked personally on any forum. Forums are meant as place for people to share opinions and information via the web in a friendly way.

Rule of thumb - If you feel attacked personally, alert a mod asap.

I haven't run into any "trolling" on this forum, but I am a member of 2 car forums where trolling does happen. Usually a new member posting about his/her car being the best and calling others garbage. This will usually cause an uproar among the community and some die-hard members.

Yea, im guilty of the "Your a rude SOB" and "He/She started it!" statement. Its just hard some times to not be passionate (my spelling SOOO SUCKS) espically when your educated on a subject, keep up with the most current information, and some jar head (marines excluded) believes they know better.

Thx for everyones input.

Troll is such an interesting word. And much misused on the internet. To the point that it is sometimes used to describe people whose opinions differ from that of your own, which really is not what it means at all. The net is a great place for discussion amongst people whose opinion differs, so obviously difference in opinion should not a troll make. I find that the best way to define a troll on the net is to equate it to the fishing term as well, rather than just to that just to that nasty creature under the bridge. Sure, descriptively, the bridge dweller makes a lot of sense, but is a little broad for just what an internet troll really is. Using the fishing term as well, it makes more sense to me: it's someone who deliberately casts bait out and draws it through the water to catch what they're looking for. And using the most colourful and best bait they can find. So add a bit of that bridge dweller's nastiness to the fisherman's persona and put the 2 together, and you get an internet troll, someone who uses the internet ( chat forums and the like) as bait to lure people to their nastiness and who then takes pleasure out of the pain that their "catch" suffers in the process, the more that they can ensnare in their net while trolling, the better for them.

You can't have the noun without the verb in this case.

That's how I define an internet troll anyways.

I like your definition, JaYBoNeS.
I can't imagine any true Trolls would last long around here without being banned but the baiting, luring "trolling" Trolls seem to be tolerated and in fact thrive.
I think it's interesting how people get involved sparring with them when they should know exactly what's going on but seem not to... or don't care. It's a weird dance. Maybe some sort of catharsis.

This is a fabulous site that does the best job I have ever seen in discribing exactly what a troll is and how to deal with them.

Mostly what it comes down to is don't feed the troll. If you feed the troll they will never go away. And yes you can end up with permanent trolls on your site who post a billion times a day, they even have their own cliques and their purpose is apparent once you have seen them for what they are. Troublemakers who argue for the sake of forcing you to reply. If you refuse to answer them in any way they will still follow you around and post negatively to almost every post you make. Once in a while they will actually post something complementary but again their purpose is to "CATCH YOU" Once they have gotten you mack into debating with them they will quickly revert back to their generally smaky attacks.

Here is the website it's really worth reading.

It's very difficult to not reply to someone who follows you around and comments negatively on your every post, so it end's up looking like they always get the last word. I'm sure you have noticed that there is one person here who I do not reply to who replies negatively to everything I post, regardless of the fact that I have not responded directly to this person in a couple of months. I don't think everyone thinks of this person as a Troll, simply because he doesn't cast out his bait for everyone. And like you said not only is this tollerated but encouraged at times by other members who don't agree with my opinions.

Nobody "wins" by posting controversial political opinions here.
There's always going to be somebody with an opposing view no matter how of-the-wall and they're just dying to share it.
That's just the nature of the beast and maybe the reason for the Outside forum.
People are addicted to controversy and you do a good job of feeding them. :D

The threads I enjoy always get shut down for some reason.

Actually I love the outside and the debates, but there are people who don't debate with the intent to do anything other than tick people off. It's one thing to state your opinion it's another to be rude simply for the sake of being rude.
