Although Zac statd he does not have trouble wicking.. I have a solution for those of you who do and will just add it here rther then strt a new thread.

This has probably already been suggested but just in case.... I design and sew clothes and there are a couple of tools that could maybe help with wicking. You can find sewing needles that are thin but have a wide eye on them for easier threading. Insert the end of your wick in there and then thread the needle through the coil.
They also make needles that you do not have to thread the old fashioned way. You simply slide your thread downward against the eye, the thread slides in but can only be removed by pulling it out like you would a regular needle.

I think that possibly either one of those methods would maybe make it easier for those with problems feeding the wick through the coil. As it seems that a solid needle would be eaier to slide through the coil rather then a pliable piece of cotton.

... Or a needle threader for wicking.

I have no physical disabilities, but thought I'd share my typical coil-building routine. You might get a chuckle:

Get home from work and have supper.
Go down to the workroom to build a coil.
Get the spool of wire and remove the wire end from the hole.
Lose my grip on the wire end and watch the wire unwind from the spool.
Re-wrap the wire onto the spool.
Measure out a guesstimate length of wire.
Reach for my ohm meter and knock the spool off the table.
Re-wrap the wire onto the spool.
Measure out a guesstimate length of wire.
Put the spool under my elbow while holding the end of the wire.
Reach for my ohm meter.
Try to clip the ohm meter lead to the wire and knock the end of the wire out of my hand.
Re-wrap the wire onto the spool.
Measure out a guesstimate length of wire.
Put the spool under my elbow while holding the end of the wire.
Reach for my ohm meter.
Clip the ohm meter lead onto the wire and lay it where it will keep the wire wound on the spool.
Reach for the other lead and knock the spool off the desk.
Clip the other lead to the wire and turn the ohm meter on.
Fiddle with the leads until I get the right resistance and reach for my wire cutters.
Snip the wire about an inch from the lead that's nearest to the spool.
Watch the remaining wire unwind from the spool.
Re-wind the remaining wire back onto the spool and insert the wire into the "holding hole" on the spool.
Realize that the red stuff on the white spool is my blood from where I not only snipped the wire, but my finger as well.
Go upstairs and put antiseptic on my finger and put on a band aid.
Go to bed, hoping I'll have more time for coil building on Saturday.

Zac, like everyone else said, do NOT be embarrassed about your disability. I'm a paranoid schizophrenic. I get scared everytime I come home at night by my dog barking when I open the door. I know she's going to be there, but it doesn't matter. That's just one example of what I could be embarrassed about, but I'm not. I own it and even make fun of it. like, i can never again say "so I'm not crazy."
As for wrapping coils, I have a kuro koiler and it's super easy to use. The only problem you may have is getting the wire fed through the hole, but I guarentee it'll cut down the time it takes to make a coil.
Good luck and I hope my story can at least reduce some of the embarrasment you feel.

I laughed so hard at this. It saounds way too familiar. I would just have to add cussing and retrieving thrown objects.

Glad you liked it. Yes, it is way too familiar. :D

Just thought Zac could use a bit of humor, and to know that he's not the only one who has trouble winding coils.

@Zac - I'm agreeing with what Mr Stick says. If you ever want, just PM me and I'll send you some hand made coils free of charge. Just let me know what gauge wire you like, the desired inside diameter and what ohms.

This forum has always been full of awesome folks, and if you want to take us up on an offer- do it. Wire is cheap, and we are all nerds.

Second what many others have said about the coil master. I picked one up and it makes winding a coil a breeze. There are quite a few videos you can check out as well to see if you thin it'll work for you. If not, I'd go prebuilt. As someone else said and I'll even mirror, if you need someone to wind you up some coils, don't hesitate to PM me. Wouldn't bother me in the least bit to wind up a few for ya and mail them out.

Zac,

Edit: (PM'd Zac instead)

and rsunderl, get some fat rubber bands and put them around your coil spools, or stick an eraser into the spool gap, or else learn to use the little nicks on the edge of the spools (or make some if they aren't there!) Probably shouldn't give you that advice, though, since I'd be depriving ECF of a good laugh!

My grandson was around the other day, and came out of my office with an empty spool of kanthal. I went into the office, looked all around, and couldn't figure out where the wire went. Until my wife pointed out that there was a massive wireball stuck to my sweatpants leg, that I was dragging around behind me (At least it wasn't TP!). Got some of it untangled, the rest is in a baggie for when I get desperate!

I think the coil master might just be the cure-all for you, although it's a little on the small side. According to the folks that sell it they are developing a slightly larger unit because it is a tiny tool.

Here's a pic to show you what I mean:

good thing you didn't include putting that coil onto your kayfun. i might not have made it through reading the steps this weekend.

thanks for sharing.

I actually just purchased a coil jig, juice and a new mod. Last purchase for a while, lost my job. I'm not a lucky person. But I really appreciate y'alls help - offering to send me things and what have you. As of now? I'm okay on supplies, until I realize how broke I am. But that's not the point, as of now - how about y'all show me your current builds?
