Question to those who are knowledgeable about building, I'm trying to rebuild some protank heads for a friend I'm gonna give an old vamo to, and all I have is 28 and 34 guage wire. With the 28 I do a 4 wrap and can't get it above an ohm, and with the 34 I cant fit the coil in the housing. Any suggestions besides buying new wire??

I use the little blue screwdriver 28g, 8-9 wrapps should net you 1.4-1.5 or so.
I usualy do 6-7 wraps of 28ga for 1.2-1.3ohm range on my kayfuns.

Edit: I missed that its for the protanks.
Then you should use 30awg realy, atleast i used 30-32 for my protanks back in the days.

28ga will be quite hard to get it right in the small area due needing more wrapps.

I wrapped one or two PT heads with 28 - 1/16" drill bit and about 9-10 wraps. It's a tight fit, but I got it to work. What diameter are you using with the 34g? If you have enough 34, try twisting it to "lower" the gauge. Steam-Engine looks to be about 3 wraps on a 1/16" bit to get you near 1.5....

ETA - sorry Cool-Breeze - I was mid edit and went away before you posted. Forgive the duplicate :)

How did those 28 ga coils work out?

Ah, the good old protank heads. Single coil I assume. I'm too lazy to try and rebuild one of those things as a dual coil.

28 gauge is probably too big. You can do it, but you'll probably have to make it big diameter, flatten it, play with the upper gasket to make the oblong wick fit, etc. When I would rebuild protanks, 30 gauge seemed to be the choice.

Other posters have mentioned burnt insulators. Again, being OCD, mine would have NR-R-NR wire construction. To make 1.8 ohms I would use about 60 mm of 30 gauge Kanthal, with NR welded on each end. Overkill for most? Probably. I still rebuild some for a friend who loves the protank with cotton wicks. He tells me the factory heads last 1 day, but mine last a week or more.

Another reason not to go larger wire than 30 gauge is the watts. A heavier wire will require more watts to do the heating stuff, but the protank doesn't have the airflow to support this kind of power. Probably best to limit the protank to 10 to 12 watts. The way the protank heads are designed better airflow just isn't possible.

I drill out 2 of the air holes on my protanks to 1/16. Helps about all you can with the airflow. I have been doing 30 and 32 ga coils. Prolly going to go with 32 full time because of the legs staying cooler and not tending to burn the insulator. The airflow seems to cool the 32 ga legs down better than the 30 ga ones. 32 ga heats up a bit faster too.

I only did one or two - 28g was VERY tough for me. They tended to touch the sides of the coil base.... I prefer 30g for my PT2 heads. Most of my other coils are 28. I may invest in some 26g, but I think I'd rather get dual coils down pat first.

I wondered how you got them to fit. And I suppose every time you rewicked you had to adjust them away from the sides of the base again?

32awg, 1/16th inch ID, fold in half, 10 wraps, floats in around 1.45 to 1.65ohms most times (this is a parallel coil build, 10 wraps each wire for a total of 20, makes a very snug fit in the housing)

ok thx everybody I figured it out...did 8 wraps with the 28 gauge and got a couple 1.5 ohm coils...it was just a pain adjusting them so they werent touching the sides and shorting... had to crimp the coil with tweezers while firing the torch on it to get it to stay compacted...we'll see how it vapes once I get it to my friend :)
