On the afternoon of Wednesday December 4, TVECA sent the following letter to NY City Council members.

Dear New York City Council Member,

Today in the New York City Council's hearing on the proposed ban on the use of electronic cigarettes, it was stated that myself and the e-cig industry association, The tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, I Co-Founded was in support of the ban. Please read below our statement correcting your record:

First, THE TVECA SUPPORTS NO BAN ON THE USE OF ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES IN ANY FORM

We, at the TVECA, support the FDA in regulating the e-cigarette under their authority over tobacco products.

tobacco products are defined as products that are derived from stem or leaf of a tobacco plant.
We do not support the same restrictions on e-cigarettes as those that are currently in place for conventional cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are less harmful than conventional cigarettes and have zero history of harm. The ability to use this product should be expanded not reduced.

Restrictions on e-cigarettes should be less restrictive than conventional tobacco cigarettes.

We do not support a ban or overreaching regulations for the e cigarette.

The TVECA is currently working on logical and responsible regulations for all 28 EU countries under the TPD (tobacco product directive).

Thomas Kiklas was misquoted as he intended to say the above.

For those who missed the NYC City Council Health Committee last week, I got into a back and forth with Councilman Gennaro after he falsely claimed TVECA supported his ordinance.

I told Gennaro repeatedly that this wasn't true and he didn't want to believe me.

I just want to say you are one of those on the front lines winning the good fight.
Thanks

Yup, right after that discourse came the ALA?? ANTZ and I couldn't take it anymore. How can we be sure that this letter doesn't "fall through the cracks". Gennaro seemed to be on a mission.

Ha, when I watched that I absolutely knew Gennaro was wrong. He kept insisting that it was printed in this and that paper, how could all those papers be wrong? Duh. One paper prints something and the rest copy it. In the ecig community we are very familiar with that phenomenon. I was wanting something dramatic like a TVECA spokesperson to call Gennaro up on his cell phone while he was sputtering and fuming.

One of our biggest problems, the press is only interested in headlines and since the web happened they want to be the first with the "news".

If you don't think it's important to them check The Drudge Report, it's the go to for any one on the right every morning and has been since the late nineties when Matt broke the Blue Dress story. (See Bill Clinton).

If you check his site in the morning most times you'll have a good idea what the topics are going to be on a high percentage of talk stations.

The same thing happens with any Big Lies, half truths and fear mongering, they end up on AP, in the big papers and from there are spread through the smaller ones. At that point they're considered common knowledge and 50%+ of the population believes that e-cigarettes can cause cancer. See the FDA 2009 press release, the study took forever to get out so it could be debunked and is still hard to find.

The rest of the press looked at what one story did for the Drudge Report and since then have just wanted to be the first it's no longer that important if it's totally true.

Politicians and others have used this to their advantage since then.
