I hope not- I'll only be 43 when the youngest is 18. Then again, I didn't completely move out of my parents' house until I was 26...sigh. Oh well, I'll take my babies over a clean house any day. One of my childless friends points out that when she goes into a "showcase house" and children live there, she figures something is wrong. She says a house with kids should always look like people LIVE in it. I love my friends

Yeah..my kids don't remember the unvaccumed rugs or dishes in the sink..they remember me having all their frinds over for movie nites and trips on the bus to the airport..for fun.
they had chores to do, unpaid because they lived and ate there. They also remember that the chores weren't cleaning the house from top to bottom, cooking and doing all the laundry like some of my friends had to do everyday. Job one was school and then play..chores came in 3rd.

My house is always picture perfect. I cleaned it once and took a few photos, and tell people this is what it looked like right before they came in!
My sister's M-I-L always said, you work your whole life cleaning the dirt out of your house, and when you die, they throw 6 feet of it back in your face! I'm just getting the last laugh before that happens. Clean enough to be healthy, dirty enough not to offend anyone.

My mom would come over during finals week (when I was in college - single mom then too) and she would do my dishes cause I didnt have the time... oh I miss her!

When my kids got older, we would have a 30 minute pick up party... everyone cleaned for 30 minutes and depending on how much we got done, we would have a treat that was worth that much.. It was fun watching them scramble to dust and vacum to get to go to the park for the afternoon or a DQ treat :)

This is how I've always thought, too. Only lately...I'm sort of sick of all the mess. I guess I'm just shocked that teenagers can make bigger messes than toddlers. And make them faster. I'm tired.:(

But reading your post, MK, made me feel better. Every day one or more of The ManCub's friends comes home from school with him. That's what's important. And when The GirlChild tells me that she can't have her friends over because of the mess, I'll invite her to do something about it!

Hey, I wasn't above assigning chores to the kids friends..what could they say after I just fed them! LOL! On the flip side, years down the road now that their kids are in High school and jr. high..they call or come over to my daughters when I am there just to say hi and to tell me they remember when...
messes are just that, make everyone pick up like Kimer does and move on! Once you are alone in the house..it won't seem so important to have a clean house, you just want a full messy house again!
I love watching the G'kids relax in my house..they have to pick up (or reset as I call it) before they go home. But while they are here..the sofa bed is open, there are toys, movies and games everywhere and snacks abound.

My group left today for a long weekend camping trip - son (35), granddaughter (4), daughter (30) and granddaughter (3) - I came home from work and it's "who did it and ran"? :)

Daughter asked me what will I do with myself for 4 days - I said, I work Thursday and Friday - you will be home on Sunday....that leaves Saturday - not exactly expecting to have so much time on my hands as to be bored....
