I kept my grandson as a young child monday through friday for a while (night and day) His mom was working two jobs and was divorced. I gave up worrying about the house until he was about 4. He then had to clean up his play area before bed. He also had to cook dinner (stir a pot or break eggs) for G'ma and take out the trash (empty some bedroom and bathroom cans in the trash) Those were his jobs until he was older. The little grandson was not here as much and as a result we had huge battles of the wills when it came to cleaning up.
Finally he got it ..mainly because I won't back down no matter how many times he begged to go home, had crying fits or saying I hate you five billion times. My reply was always "well I love you enough to teach you how to be a good kid".
In between the battles were cookies, bug hunts, games and movie marathons.
Now I just have to say it's reset time" and both the boys clean the family room and their bedroom like it was before they got here.
Be firm, insist they do what you say at all times and don't worry about the rest. After a while..they will just do it without thinking or having you ask. At least at your house!
