 What the frell? The vape, it burns!

I think it's safe to say I'm over the super-noob period, but I'm obviously no pro at this. I lost two atomizers in my first week, and I think I'm about to kill two more. How the heck do I manage to kill them in pairs?

One is producing minimal vapor, the other one is creating a razorblade/burnt taste.

So far I've tried soaking them in Pepsi Max then vodka, I've run them both under hot tap water, blown them out, left them to dry for an hour or so, picked off the burnt poly/wick that was sticking out, dripped 2-3 drops of e-liquid on to the coil... and nadda. They're still giving me issues.

I have spares, so writing them off isn't going to be as painful as last time (the week long wait is horrible when you have no spares- lesson learned).

The *newer* atomizers seem to be a slightly different design. The two that died first, and the two fritzing now have an eliptical central well (??). The parts I ordered seperate from the starter kits have something that looks like a washer around the rim, it just makes them look tidier.
Has anyone noticed a difference in design, and if so has the performance been any better or worse?

Four atomizers in three weeks is a pretty bad run. Any help will be muchly appreciated. :)

Interesting read... but my attys are the old style 510's (narrow gold band) not the wide band looking ones I see on that site. :)

The difference I'm seeing is on the inside where the mesh/bridge is joined. The ones I've been using have exposed joins whereas the new ones seem to have a flat disc surrounding them. This could be a performance or an aesthetic addition... I'm not entirely sure. If I had a working digital camera I'd take a picture... but my 1.3MP webcam doesn't show the difference.

From that thread and the comments by Lina at Joye Tech I think they're referring to the wide gold ring around the battery end connection of the new "enclosed" atomizer. The site in question has both atomizers side-by-side for comparision. At least... that's what my understanding when reading it.

... And we never sell such atomizer that has gold ring to default non-logo customers. Why did he has that pic?

From the outside, these are stock-standard attys. The section I'm trying to describe is inside where you would drip. At this point, I think I need to mention I'm a visual person. This would be ten time easier to explain in picture form. *giggles*

Hmmm... That might be why they've fried so quickly. On a positive note, the extra atmoizers I ordered are the ones with the extra ring thing. That's what I want, right? So here's to hoping these will last longer than the ones that came in my starter kit.

I probably should have mentioned earlier that I didn't purchase from the website that thread mentions, but if there is one "bad" lot going around, chances are there will be others as well. :|

I've plonked both the dying ones in a Pepsi bath. I'm happy to leave them fester in acid for a day or so and try my luck again later. That burnt taste is horrid! I've sent an email off to the site I purchased from hoping for further clarification (and reassurance that I'm not bonkers ).

Did you just remove the stray hairs from the cartridge sticking to the mesh bridge, or did you pull out the wick underneath the bridge? I accidentally pulled out some of the wick from under the bridge when I first had my 510, and it worked for a little while and then went cold after a couple days of very light use. But then again, I read a thread from someone who pulled his out entirely and said it worked fine, but it might have broken or weakened the coil on mine.

Funny I have only just made a thread on the exact same problem... Thanks so I am not crazy after all :)

I'm topping off with 2-3 drops for every cig equivalent and taking a reasonable break in between to let them cool off. I switch between topping off and dripping depending on if I'm sampling flavors or not.

Here's an update...

I think I'm back at the same assumption I made when the first two died. I *think* the pass-thru is to blame. Approximately twelve hours after starting on a new one with a ring around the bridge... and it's starting to taste funky. :(
I just grabbed another new atty (to make sure I'm not going mental and becoming sensitive to the e-liquid) and connected it to a normal battery. The new one tastes like it should, the one that has spent twelve hours on the pass-thru tastes like crud. *sigh*

Why must these hate me? I love them to bits and don't wanna go back to stink-sticks!

Mistress, this sounds like an issue with voltage. If you're using a passthrough, you're vaping at 5 volts versus the 3.6/3.7 volts of the standard battery. Stock, the 510 atomizer already burns pretty hot and gives you a lot of throat hit with 3.6/3.7 volts. The atomizers might not be able to hold up well to 5+ volts.

There have been other threads on here about people using their 510's on battery mods....but can't recall at what voltage and if any posted issues with the attys not lasting on 5+ volts.
