My daughters account is in my name too and she is 16, the bank won't let her withdraw money directly from the bank even though they are clearly 2 separate accounts. Does she have paypal or could she open a paypal?

We don't do paypal under any circumstance, and she's a legal adult now, but when she was underage, I think she could have opened a paypal account. She certainly could do online purchases.

It was with a credit union, not a bank, that might make a difference. Also, the CU had other types of accounts available if I had wanted to give her less financial independence, so it depends on what the parent agrees to. In any case, the mere possession of a credit/debit card is not surefire proof of age.

Yea, credit unions have different rules. The bank I use won't even put her name on a debit card until she is 18. I wonder what the rules are with paypal, I haven't looked into it because she always uses my ebay for those purchases. When I add a cc on paypal it has to be in the registered name so I can't add my husbands cc on my account.

I suppose this could be a reason for concern on the vendors part, considering the legalities of selling nicotine. I wonder if there are online stings for something along the lines of selling e-juice. Some states you have to be 19 to buy tobacco. Are all tobacco laws governed by state?

I believe in order to have a paypal account you have to be over 18 because you have to have a bank account and all the banks I know don't open debit accounts for people under 18.

At 16 you can have an individual checking account. MC/Visa branded debit cards are prohibited to anyone under 18 (you can still get one, just not supposed to). If they have a checking account, they can create a paypal account.

Prepaid debit cards can be obtained by minors too so vendors could have a problem. It might take more than just a cc in the buyers name to verify age.

Well, I think every state has different laws on mostly everything. Probably including banks as well. My bank wouldnt let me open up my own account (fully mine) until i was 18. But Credit Unions are TOTALLY different than a regular bank. The Commonwealth Credit Union here is, at least. And here, you HAVE to be 18 to buy tobacco, 21 for alcohol. And theyre trying to change the drop out age to 18, i think theyre going to do 17 first though, and then 18. (I work at the Capitol here).

But regardless, i would NEVER show my id to anyone over the internet. People can do crazy things on the internet or with someones information these days and you never know who the person on the other side really is! Its a scary thought. They were talking on the news the other day about taking photos on your smart phone and posting them on facebook or wherever on the internet and the fact that someone can use that photo to find exactly where that photo was taken based off of the gps on your phone!!! CRAZY! &SCARY!!

I thought you were the guy too, haha, can't imagine such a pretty girl vaping from smoking! BTW, you have a nice looking family.

VAPI--- "Just sounds like someone wanted to get a live version of you, freak. You did the right thing by not showing your id and the next time someone questions your age tell them they can verify it with your method of payment. I wasn't carded for years, last time I got carded was on my 38th birthday, I proudly whipped out my ID, and I kept thanking the woman that asked for it too! When I buy alcohol I hold it in hand hoping someone will ask to see it, they never do anymore. "

I think alot of people would not think i smoke. But unfortunately i started at 18 and should not have. :( But i have to say that being CIGARETTE FREE these past few months has been WONDERFUL!!! Especially because of our child. The mister uses an e-cig as well, we ordered them together. :) He loves vaping too. We have never smoked around our child, always outside in a bathrobe and then taking the robe off at the door afterward. We wanted him to have as little contact with 2nd hand smoke as possible. But now theyre saying 3rd hand smoke can be just as dangerous. So i am so thankful for the e-cig!! i am hoping i can quit this one day as well, but atleast i know there are no cancer causing agents and nothing that can hurt him from me using it!! &Thank You for the compliment on our family!! They are the best. :)

Rules may have changed, but I believe it is at the banks discretion as to opening a checking account to someone under 18. I had my own checking account when I was 16, but that was before the debit cards could be used anywhere but at the bank ATM.

In my personal opinion I do not think that any bank should issue a debit card that also can be used as a MC or Visa to anyone under 18...but what can ya do there.

Not sure what my cable uses, but when I signed up for their service, it required a credit card....I don't own ANY!!!! (Bad news in my hands). Well, I tried my bank debit card/mc....no go...was rejected....tried another savings debit/mc....no go. What did however work was my debit card for my healthcare spending account....go figure lol......so, there are ways that a vendor could protect themselves if they so choose......there are cc scanners that know the difference between an actual credit card and a checking debit/credit card.
