Undoing 40 Years of Stupidity?

Congratulations Boletus (and others)!
I was a 43yr confirmed smoker 1.5 pack-a-day (PAD) and quit a while ago. Started much the same as you have. A few things I learned quickly thanks to the folks here:
1. Keep experimenting with flavors till you have a couple you like. Switching tastes helps. [Flavor is wired into the reward system of our brains, so if you have something you like the taste of you get a positive re-enforcement to keep vaping.]
2. To make a start in blending your own, try mixing two flavors that go together for you. [I mixed a nice cocoa with a good cherry and voila chocolate covered cherry].
3. Have some juice that's a tad lower in nic to taper off in the evening or you could be up-all-night. [I kept 24mg for day and 18 at night.]
4. Have spares. I hated the idea of running out of battery and once I cracked a Vision CE4 I learned, keep at least two of everything. Nothing sucks worse than not having your best available.
5. vaping is an individual adventure. You make your own way with the help of all of us, but it is ultimately your vape and that is what you prefer.
6. Beware, vaping becomes a hobby and like any hobby with equipment involved it's easy to suffer from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). I set a budget of 1/2 of my cigarette cost (I bought a carton every week so I set the limit at what a carton costs every two weeks). That still allowed me to save money and get stuff.
7. Read around here, ask questions. All of us were newcomers once, most of us will share our experience, strength and hope when asked.
8. Check out CASAA.org. There's a lot of good information on there, and they are our representative organization to help keep vaping legal and safe.
Good luck, vape safe, and vape on! :)

Welcome to ECF!! :toast:

I was a 40+ year smoker before taking up vaping some time ago, it really does work. You're doing great, it took 36mg for me to lay down the smokes for good.

For DIY supplies you can use DIY E-Cig Supplies & E-Cigarette Liquid | Make Your Own E-Liquid | RTS Vapes, they are my favorite for nicotine, PG and flavorings.

To start, their 60 mg/mL would be easy, mix it with equal amount of PG or VG to get your target 30 mg/mL. I've always tried to buy the strength that was the easiest to mix down to my desired strength, the cost difference is slight.

Thanks, but that link just sends me to the main forum page for some reason. Browser issue, or does the link not work for others too? Or maybe my newbie status is the issue?

Humm good question, it works for me......give it a day or so then retry! Well maybe not a day but i do know the site lags some in regards to certain features. You have 5 but the system may need to catch up before you can make use of it.

You now have your 5 posts. Let the journey continue, but don't forget to check back here. This section has lots of good info too.

And welcome. I was also a several decade smoker. Really glad I switched. And please, don't feel stupid for the past, but look to the future. ECF and Vaping really can be fun as well as help one completely switch away from the combustibles.

Welcome and congrats on making a good decision!

I also was a 40+ year tobacco addict before switching to Vapes instead.

Good idea you had on DIY the unflavored to start. That's what I do. I buy Nic in 100 mg strength and dilute to suit. I vape only two types...Straight up unflavored and a homebrewed menthol mix and they do the job for me.

When you decide to jump into that, as was recommended--head over to the DIY section of the E-Liquid forum and start reading...the more you read, the faster you will come up to speed.

to ecf Boletus. So glad you are here. I wish you so much luck on your new adventure. You story sounds a lot like mine and a bunch of others here. Have fun with it and if you need any help or can't find something, there are always good folks here who care. That is the best part of ecf. Good luck to you and happy vaping. :)

Im glad that you are stopping the analogues also. I had smoked for 50 years and don't have any health issues now since I started vaping. I was coughing a lot and did so much that it seemed like I coughed up part of my lung. I haven't since I quit the cigs. I find it funny that when I smoked I wasn't looking up online anything about smoking but now that Im vaping Im looking up everyday for news on this hobby. I enjoy all different flavors but when I smoked it was just Misty Ulta Light Menthol. I stopped smoking Dec 2013 and have not missed it.
Good Luck.

So my first question is where to get 100 mg/L liquid that is low cost but high quality. I am leaning more toward the VG base vs. the PG, simply because it seems like the VG is more like something I would normally put in my body.

I bought some from MyFreedomSmoke , they provide batch analysis, its natural nicotine (l-nicotine) and not artificial (d-nicotine).

I think it's a good one for DIY, somebody got a better idea?

Congratulations on starting your journey to quit!
First of all, we ALL were pretty damn stupid to have started smoking in the first place, then became HEAVILY ADDICTED to burning tobacco and the insidious chemical additives. Just tell yourself that at this point, it is simply "water under the bridge", and "it is what it is" for ALL of us. We made some choices and can't go back in time.
NOW WE KNOW BETTER than even 5 years ago!! You now are making an excellent choice, in the opinion of many.

Secondly, some of us have very few setbacks in the early days of vaping, and some of us have many. JUST STAY WITH IT! If you are having any problems getting set up, it is just a matter of a bit more experimentation (with equipment, juices, flavors, etc.), and you will find something that will kill the monkey on your backs. Check in here frequently and read up a bit. It's all in here!

I always ask, that if you can effectively satisfy the urge for nicotine and the hand-to-mouth habit by vaping with hundreds of tasty flavors, and avoid burning tobacco with the tar and 4,000 + chemicals, why would you want to smoke cigarettes? (Not to mention save money, get rid of the stink, enjoy the health benefits, and hundreds of other reasons.)

Good luck and all the best!

I've been vaping since around February.. I found that I will vape non-stop in front of the tv especially if I'm the only one home. . I have a few tanks with 6 or 8 mg nic level as opposed to the usual 12/16 that I vape. like smoking, vaping is mostly a habit of hand/mouth motion with vapor/smoke coming out your mouth. . not to say I'll probably ever be at a 0 level nicotine level. . ;)

Hi Boletus,
I too am a 40 year heavy smoker and though I remind folks all the time Vapeing is NOT like smoke a cig. I still crave em and yes most often if I smell them.
My partner and I have gone from two to three packs a day, to sharing one pack every two days to a week... depending on my stress level. As of this week... I am trying to be totally done.
She was a menthol smoker and about a pack a day. I however, sucked down marbs like someone who didn't have open heart surgery three years ago. LOL, and yes, yes, I did! Thousands on rebuilding my heart and I still smoked like a fire!
Vapeing is heaven in a battery when you think of all the crap we use to put into our lungs. All the research I've done on line and with my doctor still says nicotine is what it is that's not going to change, but all the rest of the poisons we inhaled make a huge difference when we stop. So you guys just keep doing your best. Go to GrimmGreen or toodle around on line to check out other options to help.
I am a BIG throat hit kinda person so I love cartomizers. But even fairly good mechanical mods can be purchase for 25.00 if you folks take it up as a hobbie. I also use cinnamon and coffee as my go to flavors. Good Luck Vape On! ; )
