Computer usb ports are not designed to throw the amp load that a passthrough draws. Yeah, you can fry your computer.

Oh, and that little disruption in Ironforge the other day.... my friends and I were on our way to Gnomer, got lost and stopped for directions... I assure you our intentions were purely innocent. Sorry about the mess.

You want to have resistance <= the capacity of the power supply, otherwise you are over-driving the power supply, not a good thing to do.

V = IxR For a USB power supply V = 5 volts nominal, I = the rating of the power supply, maximum output current.

5 = 2 x R for a 2 A (2000 mA) power supply, so R = 5/2 = 2.5 ohms = lowest resistance you should use. If you tried, say, 2 ohms, then you would be trying to pull 2.5 amps, which is beyond the power supply rating, stresses things, out of spec.

The reason to never use a PC USB is that the USB spec only calls for a 500 mA maximum to be supported on a single port. Even if a given PC port might support a higher draw, it is really stressing it. Get a failure and you lose, best case, the individual port, but beyond that you may lose the PC power supply or motherboard, a very pricey "whoops". With a simple pass-through, get a short or near short (wire fraying over time, bad carto/atty) and you'll instantly be trying to pull a lot of amps.

lmao on the Hordie reference! And btw, OT is a (good) Hordie if there is such a thing lol. Ok how bout from an alliance player?

The 5 volt PT will require a higher output than the USB port in your pc can provide. The 2 amp USB adaptor is what I use for all of my USB PV devices. I personally don't plug any PV related equipment into my pc. There have been "instances" where motherboards PSUs etc. have been damaged.

Before you buy, Eric has an excellent deal on these:

USB Variable Voltage Passthrough

I have three of them. Out of the nine or so pass-throughs of varying origin in my collection, these are hands down the BEST EVER.
Get a 510 to GoGo adapter and some 3.5ml gogo cartomizers,
Plug into an ac or a dc wall/car adapter and behold infinite and unrelenting eternal bliss.

Trust me. There are no better pass-throughs, the variable voltage range is wide-spanning and the difference in each setting is noticeable, each enjoyable in their own way. Though I also recommend V4L's manual passes.

What device are you using now? If it's something like a 510 or eGo battery that's giving you 3.5V +/-, you're going to need a whole new set of carts/attys to use with that passthrough. Otherwise, everything will taste and vape differently. The only passthrough that I own is an 1100mah eGo battery that charges and works while charging. If you're already vaping at 5V, then that looks like a good one. And yes, do as OT says and plug it into a wall.

I'm thinking about getting a USB passthrough to use at my desk...so far I found this one...

Smok Tech 5 Volt 510 Manual USB Passthrough Anyone have any recomendations?

I've always tended towards the true 5V in a PT, it lets a person try HV at low cost. 3.2 - 4.2V is the range of the VV eGos. (I vape at 4.5 - 5.5V)

A classic PT lets you go to 10W vaping (2.5 ohms) -- what's the power limit on the VV passthrough? (otherwise, smallest ohms you can run at 4.2V)

You might be better sticking with the simple, lower cost, straight 5V PT, if you're already doing 5V and have cartos/atties in the 3+ ohm zone, unless you are seeking a cooler vape. The lower settings of the VV PT aren't what I would think of as 3 ohm friendly, not sure if 3 ohms would actually do anything at 3.2V.

If you're loaded up with eGo gear, say cartos/atties in the 2 ohm zone, then the VV PT sounds neat for a person at a desk job :)

dude, I absolutely love my pass through. I do design work and have to sit at a computer a lot... fully charged hit every time. Manual passthroughs are the best. press the button, and the world of electricity is at your finger tips...one click of a button and your hit affects the electric plant to your house to wall to your computer right to your lungs. kind of makes you feel like you're controlling the world, haha, j/k

This seems like the best place to ask this question, since you're already talking about passports.
I'm currently vaping using a V2 notebook via my computer. I have a 17" Toshiba laptop that's plugged into the wall ALL the time, is this ok or not?? Sure don't want to hurt my computer! Also, yesterday I ordered the VV USB Passthrough 510/EGO.
I ordered it because I want to go to all 510 threading, and I like the idea of being able to unscrew it and go if I want. I'll probably keep the V2 notebook as a backup. But are these ok to use with a laptop? Again, I have the laptop plugged into the wall ALL the time, does that make a difference?
