Centerville seeks to snuff out smoke shops | Deseret News

This is also the state that just banned public, indoor vaping because the Governor sits on the board of directors of the Legacy Foundation. Of course, their funding comes from the "Master Settlement". We wouldn't want the Govenor to lose his job now, would we.

"If you look at the clientele at tobacco shops, they're not exactly the best people. They're buying drugs for crying out loud," Ray said, referring to shops that have "thumbed their noses" at the state's ban on selling spice.

WAIT!! They're saying that because I (used to) smoke tobacco, I use drugs too??? I want to go back home to Idaho...sigh...

My comment was approved:

"Tobacco shops are much more dangerous to a community than a liquor store is," he said. Oh really? How many deaths and accidents have been attributed to drunk driving, versus driving under the influence of tobacco? Nicotine enhances many of the skills required for safe operation of vehicles and machinery: alertness, visual memory, concentration, and physical reflexes. Alcohol impairs these abilities. I suspect that if you asked the police department directly, they would tell you that they have significantly more calls to handle altercations at establishments that serve alcohol than at a tobacco shop.

"Spice" being referred to here is a completely different thing than tobacco. Also called herbal incense. Don't want to start a drug discussion, obviously, but google it. Tobacco shops should NOT be selling this stuff. Some are insanely potent and altering, and legal just because the compounds used keep changing to outrun laws. Shops that sell this stuff are giving legitimate harm reduction a bad name.

My take on this is the town has been having problems with owners.
Its sounds like they were playing a bit fast and loose, with the laws and some products they were selling.
It could be that it was a Tobaco shop/ shop that cant be named here.
But with out going in and looking at what was going on, Its hard to say.

The story goes on (read beyond page 1 of linked story) to tell us that they were having problems with sales to kids. They cited the owners, who then sold the business. It looks as if the new owners are behaving themselves. However, the police chief seems to believe that crimes are committed by businesses, rather than by people. He wants the business (that the new owner has done nothing illegal in) shut down.
