I'm stuck in the middle of the jungles in Papua New Guinea on an oil rig.
Have 2 weeks left here and have realised I didn't bring any coils. I run a cupti.
I've had one NiCr 1.5 ohm coil burn through when it was in my pocket and am running on my remaining SS 0.5ohm coil. This is near dead...
The cupti runs CLOCC coils that are pretty small cartridges. I have YouTube replacing them and it's doable. You switch the coil to vertical and put the cotton through. I got my hands on some 22g 304 stainless today from the mechanic here... Tried it and pre insertion it was 0.9 ohms. I put it in and it says "low resistance". I don't get it. Maybe it's the chip in the mod. But I have used 0.5 ohm SS and the NiCr is 1.5ohm. doesn't make sense to me that it didn't work... Hmm unless it was shorting inside I guess??!

The leccy is going to look for smaller wire tomoz.

Thoughts?

Stupid question but did you clean the wire you are trying to use with an acid based wash? Just being in a rig I know things can get dirty, not 100% sure if dirty wire would be an issue, and is 304 stainless a commonly found wire for coils? @untar

The only idea I have and this is a guess, when the coil starts to heat it's going too low. Id suggest trying to rebuild to check for shorts and maybe even using a lighter to "lightly" pre-torch the coil. That should settle it in somewhat and help you double check for shorts.

AMP issue possibly?
Always a possibility,
I think 26AWG would be better suited for a rebuild.
The 22AWG would need a 15/16 wrap@ 3.5mm to reach .5Ω (I don't think that is gonna fit).
A 6/7 wraps of 22AWG is right around the .2Ω mark and might work in TC mode.

If you're reading .9 with 22g SS304 then either your meter is faulty, you're shorting on the coil casing when testing, or you didn't subtract the resistance of your test leads on your multimeter.
It is also very common for Kanger coils to short with large gauge wires. The center pin compresses the insulator down far enough to short.

I'm guessing your "pre-insertion" reading is incorrect and your coil is indeed to low a resistance.

A 3mm 22g SS304 coil would have to be roughly 29 wraps to reach .9 ohms. 26 wraps at 3.5mm.

Imeo/Golden Greek makes the Spring-o-mizer coils from 304
The springomizer coils are made of circonium. Iirc Imeo is known to hate SS as coil or wick for some weird reason, he used to trashtalk the Genisis people.

Edit: correction - GG have stainless steel as well as circonium springs now, didn't check their store for a while.

I'm hearing what I don't want to hear but what I thought... The 22g won't have the resistance for the shell size.

Just threw me off the fact that the leccys's multimeter was showing 1.0-0.9 ohms when testing it before putting it in. Was 2 X multimeters saying the same thing.

I am going to try to try to find some electrical wire with SS braid. Apparently it's pretty thin. I may be able to plait a higher resistant wire?

Wondering also the possibility of stretching or "thinning"... Extruding the 22g.

Short of this one of the guys on another rig is sending over some coils of his from a different mod... Maybe I can pull out one of those coils and use?
