Was there not designated smoking area’s? I’ve done contract work (networking) for a few chemical and oil refineries and they had designated smoking area’s. And this was in 90’s when smoking was more frowned upon than back in the swingin’ 70’s
Spent 8 years on the North Slope of Alaska, we could smoke anywhere outside except on the pad as long as we were 75' from valves and fittings. Outside was not always a good option. I arrived in Prudhoe in February, minus 80 degrees F, you cannot inhale a cigarette at minus 80, it's painful. Each building including camps had a smoke shack. Many of the smoke shacks were inside the buildings some were outside where you had to brave the weather to get to it.

Have had a win X 2...

Old mate over at the other rig came through with a mod minus drip tip! That covers my time until fly out... Leaves 3 days of my other mod. SmokSAL85... NICE mod...

I canabalised the old coil in that mod and got a carbon crusted wire that cleaned up ok. Did a wind around an old electronic thermometer tip and voila... Is a bit springy and had a few goes at positioning in the shell. The top plate in the shell I had to pull out so I could tuck some cotton around the coil 20181007_093955.jpg 20181007_091519.jpg to stop shorting. Didn't replace the top plate as it would short on the coil. No biggy as that is more just for flow direction... She still arcs up and is doing ok.

A few thoughts... I wouldn't consider any non spec wire except SS. Not sure heating elements in a toaster or hair drier are ss.

Smoking isn't allowed on the rig. I'm not a driller. Medic so I'm off the pad most of the time.

Lesson learnt...

Check your supplies before heading out. No care packages to PNG... Barelt mail makes it safely here.

Cheers for all your thoughts and prayers! Lol.

Good drills.

They're most likely nichrome or kanthal. The thicker heating elements (like that grill in your oven or sandwich toaster) are made of those materials as well, they're coiled up and coated with some ceramics or other high temperature material.
Those were the first wire's used to make coils and they're still widely used today so I wouldn't call them "non spec", SS use is more recent.
