I am experiencing something new...I have now been vaping long enuff to actually SEE my supplies dwindle, hardware break down, etc...Before when I was buying cartons or packs, I never felt guilty, no matter how much money i did (or didnt have).... but NOW, when i need to buy the supplies to continue the vape, i feel a little guilty about spending the cash...

how bizarre... anyone else?

Interesting, man. I can totally understand that but have never felt it. I instead have always looked at how much I'm saving. From the beginning I set aside a certain amount of monthly money for hardware, juice and juice experimentation - which is way less than I was spending on analogs. I'd also be interested to hear form others though. Good luck.

I actually haven't had an of that guilty feeling from buying Vaping stuff whether it's juice, equipment or parts or mod building supplies. I am just happy that I dont stink like smoke anymore, my house is cleaner and I feel better. I look at it that I can't really put a price on my health and my family's. The only drag I see is that sometimes no matter how many reviews or opinions you read it can still boil down to trial and error. I do get buyer's remorse at times when I make a purchase and it's not up to my expectations but we are dealing with a very fast market and things are constantly evolving. Plus I am not the only one in my family who vapes so I have someone close to PIF to when I run into situations where I don't need or want something I have.

I can sympathize, berube... I feel guilty about having ever spent money on analogs in the first place. All my relatives are very judgmental about any kind of bad habits, and I've always been the "gray sheep" in the family (black ones are simply not allowed, LOL). But they also don't understand why I like computers, either. They just run to me for help when they're baffled by modern electronics (such as remote controls for the TV).

I felt horribly guilty when I wasn't working for a long time and all monetary expenditures were severely curtailed, pared down to only food, rent, etc. (But that's addiction for ya.)

However, I have still spent less on vaping than I would have as a closet smoker, even at just half a pack a day. It helped me to know what the math actually is. I'm a much nicer person now because I vape, so it's easier for me to justify this habit. Most people have at least one "vice" (except my relatives, ha) and this is one I thoroughly enjoy, unlike smoking; and it seems comparatively harmless. But I still plan to stop vaping, eventually. In the meantime, it's going to cost something.

Are you alone in your vaping habit, like me? Maybe there are other hidden psychological aspects at work here, besides the actual money involved. HOW we spend money is part of a person's individual value system, and if your personal values are at odds with your actions in life, it creates problems. The judgements of people whose opinions we value can really impact that. Is there someone who disapproves of your vaping? Did anyone disapprove when you smoked analogs? Perhaps the difference lies in the longstanding public recognition that some people do smoke, even though it's looked down on - but vaping seems weird to the uninitiated.

The fact that these devices are reusable, instead of being completely consumed, alters our perception and expectations of them. We don't think of them as disposables. But they don't last forever, so there's a maintenance cost involved - just like having to buy ink for your printer. I know someone who gets mad every time she has to get a new ink cartridge, but she isn't stressed about needing to use paper. Completely illogical... but quite human. Paper costs less per transaction.

Maybe you should sit down with a calculator and figure out approximately what you were spending vs. what vaping costs, and even set a budget for yourself. It can help you feel more in control of your choices, especially if you can measure the difference and see whether you're actually coming out ahead or not. Not knowing that could be the real cause of your stress. If you find that over time, you're spending less (while also getting a better value for your money in terms of health and pleasure), the guilt might just disappear.

Agreed, Garnoch. Rather than sample a lot of juice vendors' offerings (that can get pricey fast with all the shipping) from the beginning I planned to DIY in order to lower costs. So there's more of an up-front investment of both time and money, which can spiral out of control with hardware, mods, etc. if you're not careful - fine for those with the $, but I prefer to do lots of research before any purchase so that I can buy "smart" - so far it's worked pretty well. I'm a thrifty sort and enjoy getting the biggest bang for the buck. And some of my juice is really good! Whenever I needed hardware I'd add a bottle or two of that vendor's juice to try, so I slowly sampled pre-mixed flavors that way. Though it's really hard to restrain myself from going wild and ordering everything I think I might want, the budget forced me to watch for sales and keep it reasonable. And it's a lot of fun to play with flavorings.

Because of all the people on ECF, I figured I could use the classifieds or simply PIF whatever ends up not being my preference... That also helped me rationalize expenditures. At least someone will eventually get some use out of it. I have benefited SO MUCH from ECFers sharing their experience and knowledge, I will try to return that to the community whether by sharing info or sharing gear and juice. It's a slow but pleasant journey with the learning curve. Plus I have a friend in another state who's interested in converting from her "out in the garage" smokes... I hope to be sending her some of my juice mixes once she gets into it. Her husband is a Nicorette chomper for years now, so he'd really like her to quit.

It's all good - we help each other however we can, right?

Hey look at that... 365 days for me :) Actually I think a year was 2 or 3 days ago but maybe I'm wrong. Actually I'm not wrong. I received my first ecig and threw away my pack of analogs on Friday Jan. 8th, 2010 so my banner is wrong, oh well.

Fantastic Garnoch! :toast:
