Hi All!
Does anyone know why my vape (bought 4 months ago) stops working when the batteries are still more than half charged? I use a smok X-Priv. This has been ongoing for two weeks and I can't find a solution, even changed the coil, gave it all a good clean, bought new batteries 2x3000 to no avail. I'm having to constantly have batteries recharging ready to replace after a couple of hours use! I'm going through eight batteries a day...HELP!

What batteries, and where did you get them?

What wattage are you running at?

Hi Shawn, nice to hear from you and thanks for taking the time to help me out. I'm using 18650 batteries purchased from different sources, vape shops, Amazon and Vape Stores on line. I have 10 of them, the most recent purchased a couple of months ago, they charge fine and fully but the X-priv stops recognising their charge when only half used. I'm running at 46 watts. I took the device into a vape store today and they reckon the device is faulty, not the batteries. I'm trying to find the warranty for a replacement!

Sounds like it's very possible the MCU or other component on the board may be failing. If so, this means you just have to get a new mod.

4 months is a good lifespan for a Smok mod . Some Smok owners aren't as lucky as that.

Thanks for replying, really, 4 months is good?! I've owned one for a year before this new one. Can you recommend a better, longer lasting brand? Cheers!

Smok makes some decent stuff here and there, but the common consensus i most vaping circles is Smok = junk. Generally anything is better. But you go with what you feel is best for you.

Of course, go for warranty replacement if possible. I fear you may have issues, though.

It's possible the shops sold you counterfeit batteries... make sure you buy your batteries from reputable sources such as IMRBatteries.com or Liionwholesale.com. Amazon, eBay, and even some vape shops (because of their distributors, not necessarily the shops themselves) are not to be trusted when it comes to batteries. Consider that a cheap 8 Amp battery suitable for a flashlight may only cost $3, and a printed battery wrap may cost $.10 where a quality battery may cost $6... many less than savory characters are happy to re-wrap the cheap battery and pass it off as a good one.

But, yeah, at 46 watts, a good set of 3000 mah, 20 Amp cells should last nearly all day (unless you take 217 x 4 second puffs in about 15 minutes).

The Android app VapeTool Pro (not available for Apple as far as I know due to Apples anti everything stance) has a battery life calculator. Worth checking out, I think.

As far as the mod is concerned... yeah, Smok has a bad reputation, but I have had Smok products last years! In fact, I think I've only ever had 2 out of the dozens I've owned die. That said, there are better devices out there. If battery life is paramount to you, take a look at the VandyVape Gaur-21, and get a couple sets of 21700 cells.

Good luck!

The problems with SMOK seem to be QA and reliability. You may get a decent device, or you may not. It's not unusual for them to fail quickly.

As far as recommendations go, do you mind a few more questions? What features are you looking for in a mod, and do you have a general idea of your budget?

While it sounds like your present problems are likely mod-related, it's worth mentioning a few things about batteries too. Batteries come in three varieties:
  • Those made by reliable manufacturers with good track records (Molicel, Samsung, LG, Sony / Murata, Sanyo / Panasonic)
  • Those made by less reliable manufacturers, who often don't have a good understanding of what's needed for battery safety and accurate ratings
  • Rewraps - These are usually either made by the second category of manufacturers, or they're batteries that one of the reliable manufacturers made but didn't meet the required specs to be sold under their name. Rewrappers buy whatever batteries they can get and wrap them with their own brand name and ratings (which are often wildly inaccurate)
To further complicate things, the 'good' batteries are often counterfeited, so places like Amazon and Vape Shops (which may be well-intentioned but are often the victims of counterfeit makers) frequently wind up with batteries that aren't what they claim.

The simplest strategy for battery sourcing is to stick to Mooch's (local battery guru) list of recommended batteries and buy them from someone on his vendor list. The vendors he lists have good track records for providing authentic batteries (several spot test their shipments to make sure batteries are behaving as expected) and informing customers if they ever get taken in and wind up with a suspect batch.

Mooch's latest list can always be found here, and the vendors are listed in the blue band near the bottom.
