A few of us are using it on a Grand, I believe that vsummer uses a fuse (not sure which one) on a 2.1. The spring is compressed too much to effectively collapse on the Grand, not sure of the 2.1. Personally I have not had a short yet to determine how efficiently the VS2 works, so I must withhold judgement for later. Best to meter your resistance while atty is attached from firing pin to ground before using any atty, I do, even while having the VS2. For me its an insurance in case I forget to meter, which is more frequent as I get older. The REOs also are so dependable that they lull you to complacency more times than I like to admit. :)

I'm already complacent. I don't even bother metering anymore. Probably not the safest thing, but I figure if I'm pressing the button and it's not firing, no amount of pressing it more is gonna make it fire more so I let go.

How long does it take for the spring to collapse?

I have something similar called a ShortStop. I had a wonky rba and one time I tried to fire it and nothing. Thought there was nothing wrong with the RBA, and it must have been something wrong with the ShortStop. So, I stupidly took it out. Put the battery back in and fired - instant spring collapse.

After I quit hitting my self on the forehead wondering why I bought a short protection device and then pulled it out when it worked as intended, now I never use a mechanical Reo without one. The RBA was jacked up and has since been discarded.
