Folks,

I smoked for over 30 years with a 3 year break almost a decade ago. During the time I quit, I lost 60 lbs, started running and ultimately ran a marathon and 4 1/2's.

I am very interested in getting back at it.....

Anyone out there a serious runner but also a serious vaper?

I've been vaping a little over a year and analog free for 4 months now. Spent the last 20 years working at a desk (computers) with no exercise aside from the typical physical movements associated with being a home owner and father without integrating any kind of workouts, and eating predominantly unhealthy foods. In the past 4 months I've lost 30 pounds by changing my diet to include mostly whole foods (unprocessed) and started counting calories and lightly exercising. I can say that I am an aspiring runner. 6 months ago I couldn't even run around the block and now I can run 2.5 miles (limited only by my leg muscles cramping up). vaping really is amazing, and opens so many possibilities to those of us who once were hopeless.

Cool.:)

I quit smoking for a while and had never previously ran. I ran a marathon within a year. I suprisingly didn't break a world record (4hrs 45min), but I finished it vertical! Anything is possible IME after a lump like me did it. ;)

I quit smoking and started vaping 3 years ago. Starting running at the same time with a couch to 5k app on my phone.
I've run 5 marathons since then, lots of halfs and other races too. Still vape every day, and run 4-5 times a week averaging 30-40 miles a week.
I've always wondered how many other people did the same thing.

Great thread. 40 year smoker, maybe 5 years of that total without smoking usually on nic patches.

After quitting almost 2.5 years ago through vaping lost 40 lbs and run treadmill everyday for 30 mins at 4.0mph at a 1.5incline.

Vaping does not help my running but I can still run and vape. My gains in running ability have been none but I really have not pressed myself to up my running gains. I just don't feel like I want to or I have to. By gains I mean speed and distance and upping my exercising heart rate which is around 118 to 120.

I had a buddy back in the day that smoked a pack of stinkies per day and ran marathons. Go figure.

I agree that vaping doesn't make my running better, but I don't think it hurts aerobic fitness much either. I also starting running to lose weight (lost about 35 lbs in a few months) and only really got into the longer distances because my wife was doing the same thing. It really is amazing how quickly your body can recover from years of smoking and poor eating habits if you make a few lifestyle changes. I went from 0.0 to 26.2 in about 15 months.
I know for certain I would never be able to run the way I do if I was still smoking. I have been thinking lately about going to nic gum for a while and seeing if my running improves, but I'm pretty happy with where I'm at right now (ran a 3:32 marathon 2 months ago).
I would be interested to know if any others out there have seen improvements to their aerobic fitness by giving up vaping.

Not at the same time

Seriously though. A bit to old and damaged, but loved running and noticed a increase in endurance when I switched.
All my gains were thwarted by my accident and now I unwillingly Couch Potato most of the time :grr:
3 Boats and 40 Fishing Rods going to waste :-x

Yeah I would likely break my teeth out with my tank.
That is if my back would let me run.

Dang CRX, sorry to hear that. My one boat and 25 plus rods get quite the workout. Hope you get better to enjoy your gear soon.

3 ACL reconstructions have hindered my ability to do any running of substance. Wish I could! I used to bike a lot and should get back at it because I can take that over the pounding running puts on me!

Used to bike 20-30 miles, all the while with an analog hanging from my lips and passing all the "nice pants Lance" dudes all along the way!!!

I've been a smoker for 31 years (20-30 cigarettes most days) and (unexpectedly) quit a little over a month ago thanks to a wonderful vape shop nearby that recommended a good device and a juice that I loved. I've also been running for the past 5 years - not marathons, but 5k+ pretty much every day, weather permitting, except in winter.

The snow here in Montreal, Canada is just about all melted and I'm going to be starting my season in a few days. I'm very excited to see if there will be any change in my times/fatigue levels. I have a feeling it will be quite dramatic - if for no other reason, I'm breathing clearly through my nose for the first time in decades. Exhaling the vapor just completely loosened my sinuses on pretty much Day 1 of starting. I'm sure my lungs are drawing more O2 now too.

Will let you know how it goes.

I highly reccommend the "couch to ____" programs.

Running for Beginners - Couch to 5k, 10k, marathon program

You can start with 5K, move to 10K, 1/2 marathon, marathon, etc.

They have both outside and treadmill based programs and at bottom of page for each distance there is a link to download a complete training program. :)

I have a friend who "started" running at 70. :) She's doing great!
