I disagree...
...Hiding it in the dark and acting like we have something to be embarrased about is what will bring the bans and regulations, because the less people that vape and are aware of it the less knowlege there is about it and the fewer people there are to stand up for us against groups like the FDA, ALA, and their ilk.

it should be out and seen and the public should be educated..

now I'm not saying to be an ... about it either screaming and rants will get you no where..but calm, rational, educated discourse yes...

I've as much right to vape as that dour old lady has to douse herself in so much perfume that I can smell her 2 aisles away in the store...

I think there was a big misunderstanding...no one who vapes should ever be ashamed of their actions. vaping discretely does NOT mean to “hide in the dark” to vape. Within the context of this thread, being discrete simply means when you vape, show some class and respect other people’s rights.

Do we really NEED to vape in department stores, supermarkets, or any heavily trafficked public area? I cannot control the actions of the “dour old lady” with the heavy perfume, but I can certainly control my actions so I don’t invoke the same negative response as that lady does. While some may think it fun to fog the elevator to see people’s reaction when the door opens, I personally do not. When you vape in public areas, vape dicretely with dignity and class.

We have to remember that the vapor of most juices has a smell….which may be offensive to some and would encroach on their rights if we vaped in their presence.. I cannot vape my favorite Tobacco #1 from Cignot in my house because my two daughters really loathe the smell. I could just go ahead and vape it, after all, it's my house and I have a right to...but that would seriously disrespect my daughters. I may be the only member in ecf who hates the smell of cinnamon candy/gum so please don’t vape Tasty Vapor’s AC near me…I hate the smell!

In other words, let’s not rattle our sabers in the name of “rights.” I wholly agree with your points on education, but let’s not force this education because of controversy…especially not now.

Thanks for letting me ramble (sorry if it sounds like a speech, old habits are hard to break)!

I've been vaping for about a week now. I'm finding that the way I vape is take a couple drags when I have a craving, fiddle around with my vapor king for a while, take a few more.
I have not had a craving yet in a place where I couldn't smoke, but having read the posts about this extensively, I believe discretion is in order.
Not to cast any aspersions, but people are ignorant. I don't mean that in a derogatory way, just most people are totally unaware of what we are doing.

The last thing we want is to travel around, creating negative first impressions of vaping and vapers with the general public. I try to share knowledge of vaping and it's advantages with people. If we can all do this, when major legislation comes around, hopefully we will not get screwed by a negative knee jerk reaction from people who have seen jackasses making a big scene at the mall, or the movie theater, or in a hospital.

We're all adults here, and we have a great opportunity to set positive precedents with a relatively new, and little known subculture.

I'm new to this forum (firs post right here), but I've been vaping for around 3 months now. I was a 1/2 pack a day smoker and really just bought my first e-cig out of curiosity. I never wanted to quit before, but I thought it was worth trying something that could potentially preserve my health while not stopping me from the pleasures of smoking. The first day I got an e-cig I went from 10 to 1 analogs a day and since then I've managed to smoke about .75 a day (I constantly "forget" to smoke my analog some days). All this without even really making any effort whatsoever (my wallet is the one suffering).
Anyway, after introducing myself I'll get to the topic at hand: vaping in public places. I live in Mexico City, where smoking is completely banned in all public places with a roof. I agree with people who say you should not be throwing clouds of vapour around when being in a non-smoking place, but I also think It's good to vape in public in order to educate people around us. In these three months I've been vaping I've been in Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Spain, Greece and Turkey (and on a cruise ship). In all those places (incluiding the planes I've taken) I've vaped just about everywhere I go. Bars, airports, stores, restaurants, etc. I have to tell you, 10 or 20 times I've been told not to smoke there, but only once the person I spoke to didn't care and asked me to stop even after the explanation. I always vape discreetly, trying to cover the LED tip with my hand and exhaling as little vapour as possible, but I don't really "stealthvape" because I prefer to explain and educate someone than to appear as some kind of junkie. The only time I was prohibited completely from vaping was on the bar of the cruiseship (the last night) because that time I really didn't care and showed off with all the vapour I could produce (people around me started smoking). I have to admit, that was wrong, but the rest of the time I've been amazed on how nice people are if you are nice to them. I always disassemble the whole unit, explain them how it works and tell them about how great they are for my health. People love new stuff, and most like the attention; so if you just take 5 minutes to talk to them they will most likely encourage your vaping and you can even end up meeting someone nice.
So, after the long, long post I'll wrap it up saying: do vape in public, just be discreet, respectful, and more than anything NICE to people around you. That will take you, and the vaping community in general, really far.

My one and only experience vaping in a public place was on the Washington ferry last week. I asked permission to vape from a staff member and she said, "if you don't have to light it, fine." However, the stares that I got made it almost not worth it. Also, I would bet if the ferry was full I probably would have gotten some flack from passengers.

It's going to take a while before the public accepts vaping and even then there is always going to be somebody who objects and could cause a scene. Not sure if I'm up for defending vaping in public places - yet.

I do not vape where smoking is not allowed. Much of the general public is not aware of ecigs and when they see someone vaping they still see it as smoking. Most likely you will encounter a confrontation if you vape in any indoor space, something I try to avoid, but if I am outdoors and I get a raised eyebrow, I simply explain what an ecig is and that it has helped me quit smoking.

It's obvious from all the responses in this thread that everyone has really thought about this issue, and that's good to see! Hopefully together we can gently, tactfully, pleasantly, and helpfully educate the public about this brilliant little device that's doing so much to change so many lives.

One thing you can do to be stealthy while vaping is take a hit, hold it in for 10 seconds, exhale, and there is absolutely no vapor. However, if you need to see the vapor to be satisfied, don't try this. This works because of how fast vapor evaporates compared to the normal smoke produced by most other substances that are left burning.

This also works very well with a super mini that you can palm completely in your hand while taking a drag.

LOL, that's no surprise considering how incredibly huge these forums are! I suppose duplicating information is actually a good thing, because no matter where we go in here, we're sure to find what we're looking for. :D

I'm not sure that we will ever be accepted unless we get some positive press that outlines the healthy differences between Ecigs and analogs. I'm talking about "News Doctors" that are hired to talk about health issues on Fox, CNN, the networks, and other public news broadcasts and printed media.

People tend to believe what they want until public opinion changes their views. I suppose that people who know about Ecigs still look at us as pitiful people who couldn't stop smoking cigarettes and had to resort to sucking down some kind of chemical smoke that supports their nicotine addiction to stop tobacco.

Education is the key. People have been conditioned to be appalled at tobacco users. I remember a lady years ago who rushed her kids past the smoking area in an airport where I was waiting for baggage. She pulled them up into her coat tails and hurried them along, all the while giving me the evil eye for exhaling tobacco into the wind 20 feet away. I was standing outside in the smoking area, and it was a breezy day. In her eyes, I was a drug addicted threat to her children.

We have a long way to go ...

This is a great idea! The more of these types of shows and articles that there are, the better. Many people I know tend to quote or refer to such sources when discussing various topics. I wonder what we (the general populace) can do to encourage that. Maybe we can contact networks and publishers and recommend or ask for such stories. :2cool:
