I'm starting my third week as a vaper and I wonder where I can vape in public. I read many threads up in the "vaping in public" section of the forum, but I wanted to ask for your experiences in Canada, and even better in Montreal - where I'm from.

I sneaked-vaped in the metro the other day, and it went fine. Someone may have seen me but he didn't seem to care. I was nervous - I felt like when I was smoking my first analog when I was a kid. I don't want to feel shy like that for too long.

Of course I vape publicly in the streets... but I have yet to try in a restaurant, a bar, a shop or a depanneur ;)

How do people react? Do you guys have experiences to share?

I vape in school, in the bathroom or out back at work, when I'm shopping (grocery store, drugstore, mall, anywhere), while I'm pumping gas... hell, I vape everywhere. Some ..... at Sobeys once that was ringing me in told me "You're actually not supposed to do that in here," I said, "Hmmm.. that's weird. I just had a whole conversation about it to the most senior employee here AND the security guard, whilst using this, and they didn't mention a thing. Weird, huh??" Don't think I ever seen someone so red.

Sassafras! Along with abstemious, Facetious is one of two words in the English language that contain all five vowels in alphabetical order.

Being in Winnipeg here, i toot where i want (leave it alone...it's too easy :p). My wife (vape bunny) and myself went to a restaurant called the windmill the other day and i asked the waitress if i could and she was fine with it....though i made sure to use the ego batts i have. When vape bunny and i went to see wrath of the titans in 3d (first 3d movie i got to see in 39 years....most excellent movie btw) i made sure i had 808's and a ego with smoktech dct on me, again everything was fine.........well except when we we were taking the bus back.......people were looking at me as if i was buck naked and only had a rubber plunger on my head (it was funny to me to see the reactions). Sunday that just passed i was in the Manitoba Museum with vape bunny and though i was trying to make sure there was no smoke per say, a lot of people were curious about it, and one young girl followed us outside to ask what it was i had as she could smell the strawberry juice i was using.

It is personal experience that if you ask before you do then you are fine, though be prepared to answer questions for the odd smoker here and there that is curious as to what you are doing........i usually am the one blushing though as i am not really a people person, and i wonder if i am giving people the right information

Ok. Asking for permission seems to be the right way to do it. Now does any of you ever fell on a shop/restaurant/bar employee or manager that said you can't vape in his place? Does it happens often?

Once the manager says it's ok and you start to vape... does the other patrons throw insults at you or go away in a hurry? Tell me your stories!

On planes???

I've vaped several times on planes. Right in my seat next to strangers. I don't blow clouds up in the air mind you. That has a tendency to frighted the ignorant. But I do not at all hesitate and I make sure I am informing people of what I'm doing when asked.

Educating the public directly or by experience is the only weapon we have against the zealots that wish to ban everything that even appears like smoking. As proponents of this hobby, we are the foot soldiers.

I ask establishment owners/employees all the time and haven't once been told I couldn't vape.

The only time I do not is in situations where there really is no one to ask.

I've stealth vaped in a lot more places, and transport mediums than I care to think about (theaters, planes, trains, automobiles etc.). I've also openly vaped in restaurants after having cleared it with either the bartender or the maitre d'.

Never once have I been told no once I've explained "What the heck is that thing?!".. LOL.

In some situations common sense/courtesy dictates that you may have to stop or refrain from vaping. For example, I will NOT vape in church or when filling gas. I can hold off for a little while until I am done with those.

If you're near downtown check out 3 Brasseurs on Ste-Catherine and McGill College - I usually go once a week with colleagues, 5 of which are vapers also and by now they know us and we all vape openly. I always get a kick out of seeing a huge cloud of vapor hovering above our area when I walk back from the washroom.

I've vaped in a few restaurants around the city, and a few bars, Lobby bar in the east is a particularly vape friendly establishment.

Hi renthepen!
FVxh8.gif

There's no law against vaping in Canada. It's as lawful an activity as eating.
PeCrr.gif
But while eating is perfectly legal...there are places where people can say "hey, you can't eat in here" & you have to respect that if you want to stay. It's the same deal with vaping.

No one can stop you from vaping in a public place...'cause it's public & there's no law against it. The confusion comes from the fact that most places we think of as public, are in fact private...and our access to those places is entirely provisional on abiding by their rules. A Tim Hortons for example, or a shopping mall...those are privately owned businesses located on private property. If you want access...their rules apply. Which can include "hey, don't eat in here" or "please don't scream the lyrics to this song that's playing on the radio" (lol), or "hey, don't vape in here" etc.

It's the same deal if someone's in your home. Just because you invite visitors doesn't make it a public place; your rules apply.

In my experience, most places & people will not have a problem with you vaping. They get that this is not smoke...that's it a good thing. Sometimes you may need to take a few seconds to explain, since many have still never even heard of this...but that's easy to do. They'll often be thrilled when they realize what it is!

:D

In almost two years of vaping all over the place, I've only once been asked to stop. It was a cranky security guard who didn't want to know what it was, & who foolishly claimed that my Black Mamba e-juice (a citrus/blackberry/cranberry blend) smelled like cigarette smoke, lol. I didn't argue; I complied & everything was cool (especially since I was about ten steps from the door & leaving anyway ;)).

There are some places that I don't even try to vape in...because I can intuitively tell that it's not gonna go over well there. Which is fine; I don't need to be constantly vaping every second of the day. Vaping in public exposes people to the existence of e-cigs, which is a great thing to do. But there are times & places where you just know that it's not vape-city. There's a difference between being visible & open about it...& being a jerk.

So my advice is to vape on...exercise a bit of common sense, & above all...be friendly, respectful & considerate. You'll be fine.

P.S. I would just like to advise everyone to never try sneaking a vape in an airplane. Steam from a shower has, on occasion, been known to mistakenly set off a smoke alarm...and along those lines, I know of at least one vaper who ended up setting the alarm off by vaping in a plane's bathroom. A plane is private property, and most if not all airlines have already said "please don't vape on the plane." So let's respect that as we should...not only because we should anyway, but also because we don't need any negative instances leading to even more restrictive conditions. If you really need your nic fix during those few hours in flight...there are other options available to you.
