Ok, overly dramatic lede, but I do think we are in a position where vaping could go either way—either regulated into oblivion or embraced as harm reduction and even (dreaming here) normalized like coffee use.

Before I give the example I heard today, some background. My wife is an assistant states attorney prosecuting juvenile abuse/neglect and juvenile delinquency. So she told me today about a case from the last day or two. A teen was caught with several {BAD THINGS} on his person. When his room was searched, the police discovered a vial of liquid they originally thought was {A BAD THING}. I'm in a relatively small rural city (~50,000 in the county). It is easy in a community like this one for people to overreact to perceived new threats to what is otherwise a very Mayberry life. But the kids probation officer recognized it for what it was, a vial of eliquid. Her husband has been vaping gas station cig-a-likes for a while now. Even she was surprised that "they have flavors now," but she did recognize it for what it was. The police have sent the vial for testing, and hopefully the kids weren't trying to vape ..., but that situation could have easily led to a media outcry. This is a town where a white guy asking teens for directions becomes a "Top Story."

So the guy stopped and got directions, and moved on. Did not approach the kids about drugs, sex, or anything else?

The kids called the cops...and now it is a top story? Deputy Fischer urges you to contact the sheriff's office if you have any information about...what incident? The guy asking directions?

I do see your point, OP. If this is a breaking news story, a vial of e-liquid in the hands of children would be turned into a freaking nightmare.

A sample article from the hatchet crowd....

A WARNING to parents!

Today, police followed a lead into suspected drug activity and searched a local youths room. As a result of the search, the police discovered a mysterious and potentially dangerous liquid substance known as "e-liquid" by some. The CDC and FDA have long had concerns about e-cigarettes being "gateway" drugs to dangerous substances.

Police say that while there is no evidence that the substance was a biological weapon, toxic, radioactive, or contained controlled substances, they sent samples to NASA, the CDC, and drug testing facilities to be sure.

"With these unregulated liquids, you can't be too safe" stated Deputy Scooter Lee. "We always err on the side of caution, particularly with children". The Deputy went on to say, "A recent study cited the skyrocketing use of this potentially dangerous product, so we have been advised to be on the lookout for them."

E-liquids contain nicotine and Propylene Glycol among other things. Propylene Glycol is an antifreeze, and it's use for this product is not approved by the FDA. "There is no way to determine the safety of these products, and these e-cigarette vendors are targeting children with flavors like bubble gum and chocolate chip cookie dough" said Snidely Whiplash of the FDA. "If we don't stop them from this unfair targeting of children, we can expect that e-cigarette use, tobacco use, drinking, and illegal drug use will continue to skyrocket among teens" he added. Whiplash also noted, "Protecting children from this scourge is a top priority for us, but the e-liquid manufacturers are fighting reasonable regulation tooth and nail so they can keep addicting them at an early age, just like big tobacco does."

Parents are urged to lock their children in the basement until Deputy Lee and Mr. Whiplash can make the streets safe again.

Thanks, also not specifically directed to the op. But I get so tired of fear, people being afraid. Be part of the solution, stop whining and being part of the problem. Participate in the thread fight for your right to vape. We are the creators of our reality us we THE I AM.

I didn't read any replies yet.... but what exactly IS YOUR POINT?

Not trying to be mean, but I don't understand what you are trying to say?

So a kid got in trouble because he had "bad things" on him. He had eliquid in his house. Okay, and? I don't see what that has to do with any bigger picture.

I think the article you're quoting was meant to be facetious/a joke. The top article was real.

If not then I'm confused.

The OP mentioned 2 things

One was a story about a person asking for directions, and getting the cops called on him...

The other story was about someone getting in trouble for illicit substances, and cops finding eliquid at his house, thinking it is something else...

I just didn't see where the thread was going, or what point was trying to be made.

The point is that the ANTZ will use child safety as yet another reason to regulate or ban e-liquid.

Yes... Clearly they're targeting children with those flavors. Adults only like flavors like broccoli and spinach. /sarcasm

I swear, the media will try an spin a story any way they can.
