My wife quit smoking when she found out she was pregnant and at her next doctor visit the doctor didn't like something he was seeing or hearing (can't remember the details but think it may have been blood pressure related) but asked her if anything major had changed recently! She said I quit smoking! He said start smoking again but just cut down as it is causing too much stress on your system and the baby! That's not the 1st time I had heard that!

I found out I was Preg in my second trimester...I was smoking Marlboro red 100's. I asked my ob about it.....as I was afraid I may have done some damage. He advised me to try and cut back, but don't quit especially cold turkey. Think about it...that baby has already been exposed to nic...you quit cold turkey, that baby goes through withdrawal too....and my ob said that my stress of cold turkey quitting would be more dangerous. I went from full flavor to B&H Deluxe ultra lights. I personally had not problems.

Everyone is different though and soooo many factors influence the way a pregnancy will go. For example...My mom did not smoke while preg with me....I have GOD AWFUL Sinus issues all year long. She did smoke with my brother as I was difficult enough at 9lbs 8oz and she was kinda hoping for a smaller baby (as they said that smoking will decrease the size of the baby)...well, he has NO problems with sinus issues and actually is sick (colds and such) a whole lot less than I am. He was born at 9lbs 8 oz as well.....

I am not saying to smoke or not smoke, but I see no problem with vaping to curb the stress of quitting analogs....stress can really cause a lot of problems during a pregnancy. One of the biggest problems with smoking while preg is the CO (carbon monoxide) that is inhaled via the combustion (real smoke). It takes the place of oxygen on the blood cells that are vital at feeding the fetus. When CO attaches, there is no place for oxygen and therefore it deprives the fetus of some of that very necessary oxygen.

IMO there are three things to be concerned about with vaping during pregnancy:

• Nicotine (this won't apply since you are using 0mg): is a vasoconstrictor and as one person mentioned, that's where the baby gets blood, nutrients, oxygen etc... can't be good to restrict that.

• PG and VG both eventually get metabolized in the body as glucose (VG becomes glucose and PG becomes lactic acid which then becomes glucose, I think) -- I don't know how much glucose it becomes, but I do know that too much can cause big babies and/or gestational diabetes.

• Dehydration bad: you must, must, must drink a lot more water... if you used to drink 6 glasses a day, drink 12. When I was a kid I had a lot of kidney problems and had to drink a ton of water all the time and here's how I made sure I got my 3 liters (at least); buy a special pitcher in the size that you intend to drink (or a few BIG water bottles), fill it every morning and make sure you drank it all by the end of the day -- it really helps to have it all pre-measured out right from the start. You can also add a packet or two of the gatorade powder that they sell these days (comes in a little packet), I never put the whole thing in there so it doesn't end up being a strong taste like gatorade, just a hint of flavor because I HATE water.

(fwiw: I smoked through a good part of both my pregnancies and my kids came out ok too)

Hey everyone, I was just talkin to my doctor the other day about this. She said that if someone already smokes it would be better for the baby than smoking regular cigarettes, For most adults it's not the nicotine that's the problem, it's all the chemicals and especially the smoke that's so bad. Nicotine's not good for the baby though, but it's still gotta be far better than smoking regular cigarettes. I don't remember what trimester it was, but there's atleast one of the trimesters where women aren't supposed to quit smoking. I think it's the last few months. Well, I guess quitting smoking is fine, but you're not supposed to quit cold turkey. Apparently it can harm the baby worse than continuing to smoke. As far as the PG (propylene glycol), it's known to be safe by the FDA. They won't say it's safe for vaping because they're not getting tax money from it, but it's not only in nicotine inhalers and other medical inhalers, but it's in IV medications. If they can inject the stuff directly into your veins than I don't think vaping it can be so bad. On top of that I highly doubt it can be worse than cigarettes. The smoke in cigarettes cuts down on the oxygen that your body can take in, so that's not good for the baby or the mother. I don't recomment nicotine for anyone that's pregnant, but if you're pregnant and already smoke I really don't THINK it could be worse than smoking analogs. If I had a pregnant gf/wife that smoked I'd definitely be happy if she quit smoking and switched to e-cigarettes. On the other hand... I can't say much about VG (Vegetable Glycerine). Like PG I doubt it's worse than analogs, but there really isn't much research to back that up. When it comes to that the only research I'm framiliar with is the studies on analogs and not many things could be worse than them. Ohh yeah and... CONGRATS!! Hope this info helps you. I'm not a doctor and don't claim to be one and I definitely don't claim to know everything, so you probably should ask a doctor about this. It's definitely important enough, especially since you're in your 3rd trimester, That's a crucial time period in the pregnancy when it comes to smoking and drinking.

"The smoke in cigarettes cuts down on the oxygen that your body can take in, so that's not good for the baby or the mother." That's a load of crap. The physiological remedy for any deficiency of oxygen is to simply increase the number of red blood cells. Problem solved. Just like with adaptation to high altitude.

"As far as the PG (propylene glycol), it's known to be safe by the FDA. They won't say it's safe for vaping because they're not getting tax money from it, but it's not only in nicotine inhalers and other medical inhalers, but it's in IV medications." More hokum. The reason they don't say it's safe for vaping is because their classification of it as GRAS is sufficient.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is metabolized by animals and can be used as a carbohydrate source. Propylene glycol can be ingested over long periods of time and in substantial quantities (up to 5 percent of the total food intake) without causing frank toxic effects. Propylene glycol monostearate is readily hydrolysed in vivo and the propylene glycol and fatty acid moieties enter their respective metabolic pathways. At lethal or near lethal doses (6 g per kg or more), however, it has been reported to cause kidney damage in several species and toe deformities in chicks. These doses contrast with the few mg per kg per day estimated in Section III of this report to be the human daily dietary intake of propylene glycol. The Select Committee has weighed the available information and concludes that: There is no evidence in the available information on propylene glycol and propylene glycol monostearate that demonstrates, or suggests reason to suspect, a hazard to the public when they are used at levels that are now current or that might reasonably be expected in future.

The breastfeeding question i think i can help with. Your milk supply will decrease probably due to hydration issues. It happened to me. My personal opinion on this whole thing is, if it were me and i really couldn't quit, i would go to the lowest nic or zero nic that i could cope with. Some here have done blood tests that have shown way lower nic levels with vaping than with smoking. That alone would lead me to beleive that vaping nic would still be better than smoking. Not to mention all of the other chemicals you are avoiding. I quit smoking with my first two and smoked with the last ones. They weighed a few ounces less but no major issues. I am in no way encouraging smoking or vaping while pregnant, just sharing what i would do in that situation.
