Vapor quite a bit more harsh on my throat than smoking?

This is a nice place filled with helpful folks, I can see why it is so recomended by my "go to" site.

No prob. There's a ton of good videos out there and a ton of, well... not so good ones out there. I agree .45, there has yet to be ONE person on here I've PM'd that hasn't been straight up awesome and helped me in some way whether it be what I would consider a dumb noobie Q? Or just to say what's up too. Not many people I personally know vape, so it's good to socialize with people that do ya know =)

IMO... Cutting out analogs and trying to succeed without a vaping community is equivalent to giving a teenager the keys to a Lamborghini for the night and expecting it to be parked in the garage scratch free with a fresh coat of wax on it in the morning!:)

Hi guys, first post. First, something that I'm realizing from smoking... ahem... other things... is that the loss (as if it's not a good thing lol) of your disgusting phlegm coating on your throat as you quit smoking will make you more sensitive for a while... the stuff behind there hasn't seen the light (air) of day in a long time, and it's touchy. That could help explain why so many are agreeing with the sentiment of hte first couple weeks being occasionally painful.

Secondly, my advice: try something sweet. Sometimes the menthol, and even the tobacco flavors will make me struggle, but my favorite peach is nice and sugary and really easy to puff slowly on and just savor the flavor.

Echoing what others have said, you should probably lower your nicotine strength. A lot of new vapers make the mistake of choosing a nicotine strength based on what or how much they used to smoke, but really you should generally try to vape the lowest amount of nicotine that "scratches the itch" for a good throat hit (and different people like different amounts of T.H.). Turn down the nicotine, and consider adding a bit of menthol and/or use VG that has less throat hit. Finally, and probably most important, is make sure to stay well hydrated. Propylene glycol and/or glycerine vapors cause moisture in the air to condense into the visible vapor you exhale--which means you may be exhaling a bit more water than normal and a dry throat can easily become a sore, irritated throat when you vape 3.6% nicotine.

It's kind of amazing how many of the supposed "adverse effects" of vaping can be resolved by drinking a glass of water. ;)

Could be the nicotine level, could just be very harsh juice.

If you try the juice in a lower nicotine level and it's still harsh, try a different juice with a little PG. You don't want to lower your nic level too quickly too soon. Once your off cigs for awhile, you can definitely do that. You need to vape the level that keeps you off cigs.

The juice aside from the strength is a big part of the puzzle too. like others say the pg/vg content will change the hit quite a bit. different flavors will enhance or mute the TH. I do think the drop in nic will present the biggest change for you. Some flavors are very smooth and others harsh at the same nic level though. Once you explore the flavors and nic levels a little more you will surely find a perfect combination. If the vapor is too airy some added vg will thicken it up. And some cartomizers will help in that department. I find a ce2 clearomizer gives me the best vape I've had. Thick moist vapor not dry and thin. They require some fiddling to actually get to work perfectly. and I vape horizontally to keep liquid around the coil. Not for everyone but the only thing that satisfies me.

I've found that the throat hit is very very harsh on my GoGo, but i'm brand spanking new to vaping, which might be part of the issue. I've only tried one liquid and it has an insane nicotine content for what I'm used to. Though today when I used a throat lozenge to help soothe my throat before vaping, my throat was not nearly as sensitive and so the throat hit wasn't as bad.

When you start vapeing, you should start with 18mg and adjust from there. 18mg was too high for me when I started, but 16mg was perfect! I like to be able to smoke(vape) more than just a few times an hour, so this was perfect for me.
I have been vapeing over two years now and am down to around 12mg. The concept is to decrease the level of nic over time (like the patch or gum) until you are using a zero nic level. So start as low as possible.
I enjoyed smoking, but vapeing works just fine. Cigs are gross now and I would never even consider going back to them (unlike exsmokers who always will crave to start up again).
Too much misinformation and no real guidelines for newbies.
These will get a bad rap by users exceeding safe nic levels.
Remember nicotine is a poison and too much can kill you. Be careful and keep this stuff away from your kids and pets.

Some tobacco flavors are harsh. Try a little (one drop with 4 of juice) pure PG to mellow a little, adjust to taste.
You can mix lower nic levels with too high ones to bring them down with the same flavor:
50/50 mix 36mg + 6mg = 21mg
24mg + 6mg = 15mg
24mg + 12mg = 18mg
If nic level is not on the bottle, check the purchase website.
I avoid VG as it will reduce the life of your atomizer (proven) and I don't care for the taste.
Cartomizers can get harsh real fast. Try an empty 801 filter tip (black part without the white cartridge) on the end of cartomizer. Or change cartomizer often, rinsing in jar with boiling water (allow to dry) between uses.

SOOO...... much to know, check other forums for more info. This is your best source.
 
You might need to re-think the way you vape . It's NOT like smoking , at all . You draw in the vapor , very slowly , into your mouth , then inhale , all at once . You DO NOT inhale as your drawing , like a cigarette .

I agree with this. I vape 36 all the time and don't get any harsh hits. It's about dragging into your mouth first, then to your lungs. If you inhale directly to your lungs like a tobacco cig then yes it is extremely harsh. The only other time I might get a harsh hit is when I've let my addy run too dry.

I went through the same exact problem last week when I first got my PV, but it actually gets better with time, give it a few days, maybe a week and you throat will get accustomed to it. I started with 24mg strength, experienced what you are experiencing then ordered some 18mg, but now I find that I got used to the 24mg strength and use it when I need an extra nicotine kick in the ... like in the mornings or especially while drinking.

Just wanted to add my two cents... when I first started, it irritated the hell out of my throat too. An online friend suggested drinking liquids until your throat gets used to the sensation and told me not to give up. She also told me (don't know if this is true or not) that analogs have some sort of chemical in them that keeps throat irritation down- don't know about that, LOL. Anyway, you're not alone in having some difficulties or discomfort when first starting to vape. It takes some getting used to, so don't get discouraged. I didn't give up and now, it feels just as good or better than an analog. I've been on e-cigs for just over a month now. Personally, it took me about two or three weeks to really get used to them.

The first few drags in the morning i usually take extremely short puffs, just enoungh to get a hit but not enough to choke me. Then i slowly take longer and longer drags until my throat has adjusted to the nicotine. The whole process usually takes around 5 minutes.

This has been exactly my experience. I've been vaping a little over 3 months now, and the first drags in the morning are always the worst. I do exactly as pleman suggests, just ease into it. 5 minutes is right along the time frame too. I also suggest you drop your nic content as well as others have suggested, I vape 18mg and it still gives me issues in the morning. Now that I've figured this out I usually start off with a half second drag (which just barely produces vapor) and work my way up from there.

After awhile it'll just be second nature. It also takes your body and mind awhile to come to terms with vaping - it ISN'T smoking. It's different. And as long as you keep that in your head you'll be fine. If you expect it to be like smoking, you're not going to be successful!

Also, water intake is a huge factor. I go by the "half your body weight in ounces" mantra, I weigh 130lbs so I make sure I drink 65-70 ounces of water a day. It really makes a big difference. As far as I see it, I'm doing something that's healthier AND forcing myself to drink more. I really don't see any downside. For the first few weeks of vaping I continued my regular water intake from smoking which was little to none, and it really does make everything better.

Wow...I actually seem to have the opposite problem... I can rarely get enough throat hit from anything. The first few drag in the morning are the only real "satisfactory" vapes. I do use really low nic, 9 to 11, but even when I used to use 18 or 24 it didn't seem to make much difference in the throat hit, just made me get a nic headache. I do drink a TON of water during the day though, after my coffee in the morning. I've used tons of different juices and flavors, as well as attys, cartos, even dual coil cartos- which at least give an inkling of throat hit for me. And I used to smoke Marlboro lights, and less than half a pack a day... not sure what I'm doing wrong, or maybe I'm just expecting too much.

Sometimes it depends on the equipment you are using as well. Or even the charge of your battery. With Dual Coils i get a good throat hit using an eGo battery. Sometimes a little too strong if i try it when i first wake up. Usually for mornings i use Boge 510s at 2.0ohms and they give me the satisfaction without the harsh throat hit.
