Cinnamon is a very strong flavor, not for the faint of heart.

Also you smoked one pack of ultra lights... I would definitely lower your nicotine MG... Try 12

I wouldn't be surprised if an inhaler makes you have a coughing fit, that your body doesn't like PG

I would switch to a less intense flavor with a mg of 12 nicotine with a 100% vg and see how it goes.

Hello to all.
My daughter recently started vaping to quit smoking and has been encouraging me to do the same. So she bought me a starter kit and mailed it to me along with a flavor she thought I would like.

I charged the battery and filled the cartridge and was ready to go, took a small puff into my mouth, the taste was good. I inhaled just a bit but immediately I started having a coughing fit that wouldn't stop for about 10 minutes. I really wanted this to work so I tried a few more times throughout the evening with the same results.

Here is what I know about the juice she sent
American made
50/50 PG-VG
Cinnamon/Caramel flavor
24mg nicotine

I usually smoke 1 pack a day of ultra-light 72s and I know that using an inhaler for asthma makes me cough radically also(PG?).

I have read that cinnamon can be harsh and that PG is partially responsible for throat hit and I am sure the nic is way too high for me. But I don't know which element to alter first to see what is causing the problem.

So my question is where do I need to go from here? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Carrie

Since your not a heavy smoker like I was (2 PPD) I would dilute your juice. WalMart has glycerin (USP) in the first aid section for about $3 for 6 ounces. Diluting will depend on the volume of your e-juice and what percentage of nicotine you want. But don't fear this isn't rocket science.

First you'll need another bottle to mix your dilution in. The basics are easy...if you have a 10ml bottle of 24mg nicotine and add 10ml of glycerin then you have a 12mg nicotine juice...but....you have also diluted the flavor as well. If you have any food grade flavorings in your cupboard you can add a drop or so. But no oil based flavors. You can also use this handy dandy e-juice calculator to help: Do It Yourself E-Liquid (E-Juice) Recipe Mixing Station! .

My wife also has a problem with 50/50 mixes so I make our own 75vg/25pg juice for us to vape. Once you get into the swing of vaping you might want to make your own juice. It's much cheaper and you can make your own nifty flavors.

Thank you ALL so much for the replies. I think I will stick with cinnamon only in cinnamon rolls from now on.
I am going to try some other flavors this weekend at the local vapor store and see what flavor would be better for me. And I hope that they also have some other PG/VG ratios I can try.

As for why the nic level is so high... My daughter bought this kit and shipped it to me with what she thought would work. She did a good job of picking a flavor I would like the taste of. Her rationale for that level of nic was that she smoked 1/4-1/2 pack a day and started at 12 which was a little low for her and since I smoked more she thought I would need a higher level of nicotine. But she was smoking full flavor menthol cigarettes. I don't think she realized there was a difference in the nic level between the full/light/ultralight flavors. I think she was only thinking that I smoke more per day.

But I gotta love her for trying... she's Awesome!

I have been vaping for about 4-5 days now and. I had the same issue the first 24-48 hours.

It gets better you just need to stick with it. The first two hits in the mornings are still a little strong but after that its smooth sailing.

You could probably drop Nic concentration, I believe that will help with the TH (Some one will chime in if I am wrong on that).

I have not had a smoke in 5 days and I have only had one moment where I was wanting an analog I grabbed my PV right away and started vaping. I found the key is... If you have any analogs left, break them, say good bye and throw them in the garbage.

Yeah, the first thing that came to my mind is way to much nic level for a ultralight smoker. 6mg level would be more to what you are used to. Dropping to 100% VG will make it a smoother hit also. Also to consider is the type of cartomizer you are using. Are they prefilled blanks? Are they ones with fiber around the side that soak up the juice. Is it a wicked clearomizer? These things all effect the quality of the vape and with out knowing the gear that is being used, makes suggestions and recommendations difficult and misleading.

I know that for me, the higher the PG content, the harsher the taste, but every one is different, still dialing in me preferences.

Thank you for your replies. I did read the post on here somewhere about how to vape as opposed to smoking and I thought I was only drawing it into my mouth and holding it there and then inhaling but after the first try I just began holding it in my mouth and not attempting to inhale at all. It still made me cough but I am going to go to a B&M this weekend and try to find a smother flavor and lower the nic. I really want this to work because I have tried everything else to stop smoking with no success.

First, CONGRATS to you!!!
As soon as I read your initial post I thought the nic is too high.
Don't give up. You'll find what works for you.

And a thank you to your daughter for her efforts!!!

Welcome to the forum. There is a lot of great advice in these post so just wanted to welcome you here.
Enjoy the visit to your local vape shop, they will also be able to help you find the right juice to get on a better path and teach you some more pointers.

Good luck. Look forward to reading what flavors you ended up with. ;)

Which nicotine strength to use when you are starting out is always sort of trial and error. Not everyone inhaled cigarettes the same. Some people let a cigarette burn in an ashtray while only taking a few drags from it yet it still counted as a whole cigarette smoked. You get the idea.

Typically we make a generalized recommendation for a 1 ppd smoker to start out between 18 - 24 mg nicotine. Once you try that and make a determination on how well or not it works for you as an individual, you adjust the nic lower or higher next time you purchase e-liquid.

While 24mg sounds high it really is not...the first and for most thing to alter is

This is not smoking ;) there is a technique to it.

Vaping is different from smoking. While smoking you inhale into your lungs, vaping this is not needed. Hold vapor into mouth and exhale through nostrils. Vaping is water based and "heavier" than smoke thus will irritate lungs (like when a drink goes down the wrong pipe)....we don't want water in our lungs ;) we don't want tar and other crap from smoking in our lungs either :D

Also take smaller drags off of vaping at first instead of the deep full lung drags we've become accustomed to with smoking and exhaling through nostrils will help with coughing fits and nic fits.

The juice she sent you sounds like a good start. 50/50 pg/vg....if after sometime this is still an issue try a higher vg level as yes there are some people allergic to pg.

I've always had bad allergies/sinus' and asthma due to it but 50/50 hasn't upset any of them. If you still feel that you are getting a very strong throat hit and choking try 2 or 3 drops of vg (had to do this myself today lol) to mellow it down but not much more as you'll lose your flavor.

Ok here's the update.
I went to the local vape store that is closest to me. I tried almost every sample flavor they had and for some reason I could not taste any flavor in any of them except the cinnamon. Their samples were all 18mg and still made me cough. They didn't have any VG flavors. Going on the premise that the coughing is caused by too high of Nic, I purchased a tiny bottle of the Cinnamon in 12mg and brought it home to try. Cough Cough Cough!

So the next day I went to another shop about 40 miles from me. They had some VG flavors but not any I could sample. And the girl working there told me their flavors are all 70/30 VG/PG. And she also showed me how to do a french inhale? letting the vapor roll out of your mouth and inhaling through your nose. This seemed to help a little.

So I chose a cherry pomegranate flavor in 6mg nic and brought it home to try. Cough Cough!

I don't think the 6mg is strong enough but it's hard to tell since I can't vape it properly.

She also gave me some samples of apricot and pistachio that have no nicotine and they make me cough too.

So by a process of elimination I think it is the PG that is causing the majority of the problem.

I went to Heather's Heavenly Vapes website (because people seem to like her stuff) and I was going to order a sample pack of VG flavors. But from what I can tell, she doesn't offer the VG juice in the sample packs.

I have read that the VG juices mute the flavor and I seem to have a hard time tasting the flavors anyway.

So if anyone can recommend a website that has samples of VG juices with good flavor I would greatly appreciate it.

I know that I seem to be a hard customer to satisfy. But I also know that this is never gonna work for me if I can't enjoy it the way I enjoy a cigarette. I think I would be best suited by DIY but hesitate to try that until I figure out if I can vape anything without constant hacking.
