Hi,

The other day I decided to see what "pure" vapour smells like. So I blew air through the air intake of my nautilus Mini, producing a nice puff of vape out the top. Then I sniffed this vapour.

Whoa! That stuff smells horrible. It burns the nose and smells like an electrical fire.

This is with a fresh coil and 18mg Hangsen RY4. Normal inhalation is fine, very tasty caramel tobacco as usual.

What is that terrible smell? Is it what nicotine smells like? If you smelled it anywhere else you'd definitely not think it was a good idea to regularly inhale it.

I have not tried that method. However, I do know that some vapor from certain eliquids that I use tend to "linger" for a few minutes. When the house that we are renting was for sale last year, I had a cinnamon roll eliquid that I really enjoyed, and noticed that the scent seemed to carry over for a short while. I made sure to vape that eliquid when we were showing the house to prospective buyers, since it was a very pleasant scent and made it seem like we had been baking. On the other hand, I have gotten a couple of eliquids that had maple flavoring that seemed "skunky" (that is the only way I can describe the flavor and the scent of the vapor), no matter how long I steeped them. Needless to say, I am very cautious when ordering anything with maple flavor in it.

doesnt make sense.... now if you took a small air pump and applied it to the airflow hole of the atty and tried that... then it would be closer to "pure vapor"

I think the air flow was similar - though I guess a bit damper as breath is not the same as room air. Point is though, WTF is that burning plastic smell?

Not enough air thru the device using that method I would think.

I tried Hangsen RY4 and consider it pretty horrible stuff though.

I think this ^^^

Because you aren't getting the same air flow as you would with a normal draw the wick/juice is burning. With more airflow there is less heat (more cooling of the coil) and therefore no burning. Just my guess.

I'm trying to understand.

So you blew air;

So, I suppose you must have also fired the coil right?

18mg might burn the nose.

Too much power to the coil might account for a plastic smell.

There's nothing burning, the coil is fine. I tried doing it another way - took in a big mouth-full (I'm a mouth hitter) and then immediately let it out as a tight cloud. Then sniffed that. Same burning plastic smell.

I think it's what nicotine smells like. I tried again with a different tank (also a Nautilus mini) and some juice I mixed myself (pear and anise @ 12mg) - there's some of the same smell in there, but less. This is with a totally different liquid, tank and battery - the only common factors are the nicotine, PG and VG.

Maybe a few of you could try it, reassure me I'm not doing some thing harmful here? Regardless, I think I'll steer clear of non-UK made juice, who knows what's in there.

Nicotine itself is odorless and colorless until it begins to oxidize! A lot of flavoring smell different than they taste. Some people may have experienced this with some cheeses, which in some cases smell like death, but taste fantastic! OP, you might want to try different juices to see if your original juice was the likely culprit!

Yes, I plan to try this with every juice I get (mouth-cloud-sniff). I'll also mix a little high-nic no flavour to see if it is the nicotine. What concerns me a little is that there could be something toxic in the HS RY4 - it really does smell like something you should not inhale, even though it tastes fine when vaped.
