I have been vaping on a vaporlux for almost 2 years, well it has an internal battery, and it started to not hold a charge. It was a great variable voltage device, but not being able to change out the battery was a major bummer. I started seaching for a replacement. It had to be small for carrying around town, have a long battery life, adjustable voltage with an ohm reader, and most importantly, the ability to change batteries. The Smok Tech variable volt gripper seemed to fit the bill, however, I read some reviews that complained about the cheap build quality, but for $40 bucks, I decided to give it a try.

I have to say, This thing is awesome. I don't see the issue with the build quality, yes, its made of plastic with a rubberized coating, but it feels solid. In fact, it feels great to hold. Its simple to use, no complicated menus, and it has a very clear backlit LED display. I popped in a panasonic 2250 mah hybrid battery, which fit perfectly, and I'm getting 1-1 1/2 days of vaping before changing the battery. It vapes great, plenty of power. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the fire button is very clicky, but it fires everytime without fail.

So, in conclusion, if you want an inexpensive variable voltage device with an ohm reader, thats small, looks and feels cool, has long battery life, then I would highly recommend this device. I know the new trend is variable wattage, and smok tech has come out with the Groove, but it too has an non changeable internal battery. Advice to Smok-tech, update the gripper with a variable wattage chip, it would outsell the Groove.

The Groove was Smoktech's answer to an upgraded VV Gripper. It's now being built with a metal body instead of the cheap-feeling plastic, so perhaps the company is starting to learn from past mistakes.

I've had a Smoktech VV Gripper for a few months. I like the feel of the body shape/ergonomics, it gives a nice vape, too. For the inexpensive price, I was able to sort of overlook the cheap grade of product quality. The top connector was wobbly from the start, the fragile looking battery cover was just that but I managed not to break mine. The fire switch is clicky (not my preference), but I liked it's top position.

After 7 weeks of use, the three front buttons collapsed into the body, making it unusable. Luckily, it still had a vendor supply warranty with one week left, so after sending it back to the vendor for credit they replaced the defective Gripper for a new one. The newer Gripper's connector is more solid, not wobbly like the first. Everything else is the same.

Although I purchased this device to take the place of my full size Provari for when I vape away from home, because of it's fragile build I'm reluctant to allow it to take much abuse, which is more likely to happen when carrying it out of the house. I still end up carrying the Provari as it's just a more satisfying device to use. I just ordered a Mini Provari for out of the house use.

Would I recommend a Smoktech VV Gripper to another? It depends on their expectations. If they are looking for an inexpensive throw-away VV device, yes. If they are looking for a long term durable device, no.

Love mine so much I still use it after prying it open to fix a disconnected wire to the metal plate in the battery door. It's the only VV device I use when I accidentally wrap a >1.2 ohm coil.
