Bought some vg at a local health food store. It doesn't say usp grade but it does say it's food grade. The only ingredient is glycerin 'derived from non-gmo palm oil or vegetable oil'. Is this safe to vape or should I return it?

I wouldn't vape anything that didn't have the USP designation. That is supposed to be food grade and there would be no reason for a company not to include that standard - there's a reason why it IS the standard.

If the bottle says skin or body care, I WOULDN'T use it. If you have doubts, Google the manufacturer on your bottle, and send the company an inquiry as to the product.

If it is labeled "food grade" it should be fine. In order for Food Grade to be put on a label, the substance must be processed and packaged with clean equipment and the product can be safely eaten by people. "Food Grade" means that it is approved by the United States Department of Agriculture for usage in food processing. Specifically, it means that the United States Department of Agriculture has tested sample drums of a production run to certify that it is not contaminated, that its concentration level is the level stated, and that it does not contain harmful stabilizers.

Read the entire label (sometimes info. is printed on the side of the front label giving info. on adding to foods as sweeteners, etc. which then you can be sure you can use it).

An example from Starwest Certified Kosher Vegetable Glycerin: An amazing product whose unique combination of properties have made it useful in a wide variety of applications. It is a clear, colorless, thick liquid with a naturally sweet taste. 100% food grade, vegetable glycerine is derived from palm oil by the process of hydrogenolysis, which removes the fatty acids, leaving pure vegetable glycerine. Metabolized in the body like a carbohydrate, it is easily digested, and its warm sweet taste makes it an excellent substitute for sugar. It is extensively used in the preparation of coffee and tea flavors, and as an ingredient in soft drinks.

USP designation: The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is a non–governmental, official public standards–setting authority for prescription and over–the–counter medicines and other healthcare products manufactured or sold in the United States. USP also sets widely recognized standards for food ingredients and dietary supplements. USP sets standards for the quality, purity, strength, and consistency of these products–critical to the public health. USP's standards are recognized and used in more than 130 countries around the globe. These standards have helped to ensure public health throughout the world for close to 200 years. (from About USP )

Either designation on the bottle is just fine as long as it is Vegetable glycerine (vegetable only base). Glycerine can be animal, vegetable or synthetic. It is commonly animal based, or a blend of animal and vegetable oils. Even kosher glycerine can be animal based. Asking particular companies about their food ingredients is often the only way to find out if the source is animal or vegetable.

About Vegetable Glycerine: It is also used as a humectant, a penetrant, and a softening agent. An effective ingredient in massage preparations, glycerine provides a soothing effect, making the skin supple, while offering a protective action. The emollient and lubricating properties make it very effective for dry and scaly skin. It can be also used as an agent in cosmetics, toothpaste, shampoos, soaps, herbal remedies, pharmaceuticals and other household items. It also acts as a solvent in extracting botanical properties from plant materials (without the use of alcohol). Makes a great hair conditioner! :)
Happy VG Vaping!
