All good advice except WEP. WEP is so old and outdated. WPA, and preferably the more robust WPA2 is what should be used these days. Most modern routers will allow for the use of both WPA and WPA 2. And a good password of course. :)

Was just about to make this suggestion myself. Even a noobie can use a ready made program to crack a WEP password in under 2 minutes...

Another suggestion... Even though it is a popular selling point, try to avoid a router that has Wifi Protected Setup(WPS). WPS can be exploited to get past even WPA or WPA2 in a matter of minutes.

That one is new...I didn't know. Thx. Will have to check GF's router. Wonder if it can be turned off?...........hope so.

I turned off wifi on my stuff, removed the antennas and hardwired everything. ;) Not always an option for certain tasks though. GF uses wifi at her place. Will have to check.

Couldld even be a lot more simple method of them retrieving your cc information, in most cases the credit card company will give your cc info to companies that ask for it for various reasons, its just part of it. Your best bet is to get a temporary virtual card like suggested above or get something like a green dot pre paid card, it kght cost you a couple extra bucks to load the money on there or whatever but a couple bucks for a secure transaction isn't a bad thing, I wouldn't go with green dot exactly as they have a lot of bad reviews out there, just an idea tho.

reaver-wps - Brute force attack against Wifi Protected Setup - Google Project Hosting

Note that it says it will take a few hours... Fast enough for most people wanting to get into your wifi, but the app can actually complete in a couple minutes if your computer has the capability to allot the GPU toward the job.

Funny...I always see posts from people getting their CC stolen and hear of it happening. I've been using e-commerce for years, nearly everything I buy is online and I've never had a card compromised.

The only time I've ever had charges I didn't authorize on a card was from Paypal. It wasn't that the card was stolen but three times Paypal decided to go ahead and withdraw money out of my bank account without my approval. They did this once because someone bought an item from me on eBay and tried to use a fraudulent credit card number....nothing I did wrong, yet Paypal decided to debit my bank account anyway. The other 2 times, I had ebay buyers try to scam me. As soon as they filed a complaint Paypal debited my bank account for the amount of the auction without notifying me. Once it turned out that I was in the good they released the money...albeit without including the non-sufficient funds fees I suffered because of it.

BTW....I don't use Paypal or eBay any more. Seems once they have your bank account info as a seller, they feel they can just do whatever they want with your money. The worst part is that since Paypal isn't a bank, you have no protection and no recourse. It borders on criminal IMHO and I just refuse to ever do business with either company again.

Sorry for getting off course there....I just really get angry when I think about the whole mess.

Anyway...I've used credit cards online for 1,000s of transactions and never had any suspicious activity. Maybe I'm just lucky.

love your avatar!:thumb:

When was the last time you checked your pc for virii? Your computer can be compromised in a lot of ways, it's not neccessarily ecig vendors, unless it's some shady url you can only access with a special handshake and it doesn't say https://. Your question is too vauge to simply say 'yeah they're safe'. Asking you where you shop would be irresponsible. Some detective work would be in order with your bank, along with scanning your system with good av tools (not norton or mcclaffy).

The same card? Maybe you should have it cancelled.

This is second time my credit card number, been stolen in three months!
I only use one credit card of mine to make online purchases for ecigarette items.
And in three months , Its been stolen twice.

Anyone having issues with card numbers being stolen?
Are the ecig sites safe? I shop at about four of them.

I use the keyboard fake thing, so it scrambles everything I type. I run a cleaner on my computer every morning to wipe it and keep my virus scanner updated.

I buy everything online and have never, ever had a problem. I guess I should be knocking on wood, but I have been buying online for going on 15 years now...

ETA: I also have it so no one, including myself, can take a screenshot.

As for hacking of other sites, my credit card company is going to take care of whatever erroneously charges to my account. That is why we have limit protection and fraud departments. I do NOT use a debit card that could trace to my bank, that would be entail more risk.

like spider362 I always use a virtual cc #. it takes a few minutes to set up, but i found it also makes me think about my impulse purchases :) if my charge is going to be for 13.50, I set the card for 14.00. my cc company also lets me set a expiration date (2-12 months).

we had our cc # stolen, but we think it was a restaurant, it was a card we do not use online.
the cc company called us because the charges were unusual for us. to our amusement several days later we received 2 packages...from the stores the charges were made at. apparently either the crook or the store got confused and the pkgs got shipped to the billing address. I hope they were caught!

What is the keyboard fake thing? I have many malware/spyware scanners and would be interested to see what that is.

knock on wood. Fast. It's not always your local computer. Many times it is. But also small venders are hacked, even big CC processors. Then there's scanners, and random # cracks.....

Anyone having issues with card numbers being stolen?

Let's see, in the last # of years I 've had my CC hacked by Sears, Zappos, Churchill Downs/Twinspires, TJ Maxx.

I just monitor my bank statements and my bank has fraud protection. Otherwise, I'd be changing CC #s for the rest of my life.

I also have fraud protection w/Experian on my credit report.

FWIW, I use a debit card credit card and don't keep a lot of money in my account, so it's not like they can clean me out much LOL

Let me clue you guys into the ugly truth: I worked in a network operations center for a decade, in the banking sector. I know a lot of forensic security IT guys. MOST big name CC and big US corporate accounts have been hacked to some degree......they just aren't reported. It costs them millions every year. It's sheer naivete not to understand this is happening all the time, they just don't report most of it because it's an embarassment.

It's a CNET download called KeyScrambler Personal. This will prevent "keylogger" viruses, but it will not prevent a vendor's site being hacked to obtain sensitive info.

I had been using my card at the same sites for years...e-cig sites the last 3-4 years. It wasn't until I started ordering from new vendors that my number was stolen. For those who use your debit I would advise strongly getting a credit or debit card to use online. I didn't have that much money in my bank account but when it's all that you have it can be scary. I did get a debit card to use online, more of a hassle but safer.
