Hi all you diy fans. I've been buying the 500 ml size of vg, and I pour required grams for recipe from that big 500 ml bottle into my tiny 30 ml bottle as I mix. I do have a squeeze bottle I could use, but I have terrible hand pain (arthritis or something prolly) so I just can't squeeze. I was thinking about pump bottle for dispensing. I was thinking maybe I could buy gallon vg instead of 500 ml... but would I be able to find a pump action thing ? I wish wizard lab or somebody else sold gal size with pump. I saw Amazon.com has some bpa free soap or lotion pump bottles. Do you think they would work ?

I saw your post @SupplyDaddy and I thought of a conversation that took place over on the TFA thread. A member (@Simply Red ) used a pump similar to the one in your pictures.
His first mention was here:

And his results here:

He seemed to have two problems; the pick-up tube was too short, and the internal top seal leaked.

The short pick-up tube could be overcome by using a short length of surgical tubing to extend it to the bottom of the desired bottle.

The leaky seal might have been avoided if it was pressed more slowly and/or with less force (maybe? Just a wild guess... I have no idea how firmly he was pressing.). May also be problematic to that specific model/manufacturer/unit? Perhaps another brand would perform differently. And lastly, he was breaking down 2 full gallons at a single sitting, that's a pretty extended period of use. If Steelgirl's use is of shorter duration that might not be a concern.

Also @Steelgirl, I see by your badge, you are located in Houston. I was thinking you probably have a restaurant supply store in the area (I believe Houston is known for it's restaurant scene). They have various pumps for condiments like catsup and mustard and they're usually pretty cheap. Just a thought. These types of condiments must be as thick as VG I would think.

Possibly even a janitorial supplier. Though, in that instance, I would want to talk to a sales person to make sure the pump can handle thick liquids like dense soaps AND it is food-safe rated (like an NSF rating).

And trying to pour the last little bit out of the 1 gallon jug and into the itty bitty funnel was a P.I.T.A.

Pretty firmly and steadily and it took me about 2.5 hours to put distribute to the 100ml bottles. Yeah, that is a lot of continuous pumping for a "cheapy" pump but, it was a "one-time" thing. If you plan on doing this on a regular basis, I'd invest in a higher quality pump than the one I had.

Thanks for jumping in Red. I don't know if you had time to read the OP's initial post but I believe she is looking at a pump for more of a mixing session to mixing session type of use vs. the marathon session that you encountered with your multi-gallon breakdown purpose. Her primary interest/concern is her need to find an alternative to having to squeeze something due to had pain.

Do you think the pump you purchased/used would have any better longevity if it were used in a lighter duty type of environment?

The one I bought was definitely a "cheapy" and I knew I was going to throw it away when I was done. I'd get something like this...

www.smile.amazon.com/Perfume-Studio-Replacement-Dispensing-Viscosity/dp/B01FLABI9A/ref=sr_1_45_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1470735305&sr=8-45&keywords=gallon+pump+dispenser

...which says its for high viscosity. Might last longer.

I picked up a couple of cake icing dispensers yesterday at Michaels for $1.99 each. They look like clear catsup dispensers and are a lot easier to squeeze than a catsup dispenser, but I might have to snip the tip to widen the tip for VG. They look like a good solution for VG/PG if it's not cold and thick. Both PG and VG seem to hold up well at room temperature in juices, so they should do well at room temp for DIY.

Thanks Red. I'm re-posting your link minus the "smile" (charitable link) as the item gets lost:

I'm not sure what this is Dave. I looked on Michael's website but couldn't find anything by that name or description. You got me curious.:)

Not a bad call. I found this on Michael's and it's at Dave's stated price point (though where the heck he got "cake icing" from is beyond me :p ):
Wilton® Squeeze Bottle

Yep, that's it.

It was in the aisle where the cake decorating stuff was. I had to ask an employee. I described it as "like a catsup squeeze bottle in a restaurant". She turned around and said follow me! She led me right to it and pointed. I guess it's one of the things that people might use to write your name on a birthday cake using colored icing. I haven't used it yet, but it feels like the cap might pop off if you squeezed it really hard. Maybe not. It's described to be for filling candy molds with melted candy.

They are flexible clear rubbery-plastic material. I'd go easy to find out how much pressure they can take before the cap pops off. One reviewer said it was crap for dispensing melted chocolate. Sounds like he squeezed a little too hard after the melted chocolate softened the plastic!

Amazon has the same thing 6 for $7.99.
