Hi,

Ive been mixing my own liquids for about 3 months now. I've been lurking here for a while, and I got several base recipes that I use from here. But now I have a question. It's my OCD type personality coming to the fore. So here it is. When mixing I usually calculate out my VG/PG ratio without considering the flavor at all. So basically if I am using 20% flavoring, I do 40% PG and 40 VG, or whatever to balance out the nicotine, and call it a 50/50 mixture. Is there any standard? Do you consider the flavoring as PG? What % is the flavoring? Just trying to figure out how everyone else calculates it out. Thanks for the help.

There is certainly no "official" standard, and it really just depends how precise you want to be. In general e-juice parlance, the PG/VG ratio often ignores the contribution of the flavorings, but many DIYers include the flavoring carrier (PG, VG, PGA...) in their calculations, and some of the calculator applications provide for that if you want to use it. Of course that requires that you know what the carrier is; some vendors provide that inform0ation up front, some do not.

But what really matters is that your methods are consistent and repeatable for you.

[edit] That is one reason most recipes will include the brand of the flavoring; instead of saying 3% mint, for example, the specific mint flavoring is named.

I calculate it using ejuice Me Up calculator so I know what the finished product is. The only reason is because I buy Unflavored mixed at 75/25 with 24 mg nic and add my own flavoring. Adding anything to the mix will shift one thing or another. I make it so it is close to what I want. If your way has been working for you, Do Not Fix what is not broken :) Happy vaping!!!
