Well, I also have the dreaded liver and onions story so I'll go on to the one that was the most traumatic. My mom was a big fan of casseroles or hot dishes. She made one once that had something I couldn't identify in it so I didn't want to eat. It turns out it was canned mushrooms....over cooked! Well, to a kid, rubbery mystery mushrooms were just awful. I remember to this day how she made me sit at the table until I ate it. What's even worse, she made my poor dad sit there with me to make sure I did eat it. Well, he finally said real quietly, "Debbie, I'll give you a quarter if you take one bite". So I held my nose and took one bite, barely keeping it down!! Then my dad, God bless his heart, made the rest of the food, which was very cold by this time, disappear and covered for me with my mom!! I will never forget sitting at that table in pure misery staring at that plate of gray mushy food!! After that I promised myself I would never make my kids sit at a table until their plate was clean, and I never did!! Thanks for the contest...and the trip down memory lane!! purple is my favorite color and it's really pretty!! :)

Believe it or not, chili dogs. And she made them about once a month.

I'm not a chili dog hater, except for the way she made them, which was to take white sandwich bread and split 2 hotdogs and lay them on the bread facedown. Then ladle hot chili all over that. Ug, the thought of that soggy bread even now...eeeks. In my house, you could not leave the table until you had finished every bite.

what a fun idea for a contest :)

when I was around 7 or 8 my mother made me sit at the table until I choked down a boiled egg. I am not sure how long I sat there but it was a long time :) 50+ years later and I still hate boiled eggs........

oh and PS I'm going to come to this thread when I want to lose my appetite ....some of the foods are kinda gross sounding lol

When i was about 6 my mom fed me cottage cheese. It doesn't sound so bad now but as a child i was horrified by the way it looked. I didn't try it again until I was an adult because my mom made me eat it when i didn't want to haha :) I was going to say liver and onions which is another super nasty thing she made me eat :) but it was already taken haha!

My dad cooked eggs n brains regularly. Also eggs n roe.
Mom had us eat sweetbreads in a filo dough basket.
Turtle soup stinks. Eels are like bacon. Pigs feet must be pickled, pickled eggs were not so good.

Edit I forgot the beef tongue. Don't open the lid while boiling-just sayin'
Mom hated liver so never cooked it. Dad always ordered it when we were out. And made us taste it

It may sound uncommon how common this food is but.... salmon patties... Ugh! Somehow the mix my mom used was AWFUL.. just awful. And I always, ALWAYS got a round, hollow bone in my food, without fail. I couldn't help but gag every time I bit into it. The little bugger would hide and I'd find it with my teeth.

    Gagpukegag!!
