The only time I ever got a burnt taste with cotton is when I left part of the coil not wrapped around the cotton, or there wasn't enough juice to feed the coil properly. I've gotten burnt tastes with both nichrome and kanthal, but it was fault of my implementation process, not the resistance wire itself.

Why does it seem to have a horrible taste? Like something burning.
At first I thought it was the cotton wick, so I tried regular wick and had the same taste.

Where did you get your NiChrome 60? I got some from a ecig vendor (Which I later found I way over payed for) that tasted bad. I had to run a flame over it then it was ok. Then a friend gave me some he got from a hobby vendor and it works great right off the roll no funky burnt taste and it cost $11 for 250 feet =$.04 a foot.

Can you explain, what do you mean by "left part of the coil not wrapped around the cotton

I bet I know...I've had that happen when one of the end coil loops gets loosened and pushed away from the wick during reassembly. You end up with one loop of the coil not in contact with the wick and it gets much hotter than the rest of the coil. Similar to what you were talking about, L7D4N?

Also, I think you should always pass your coil wire through a flame, just a Bic lighter will do, just making it glow a little will burn off any manufacturing oils etc, plus it will make it less springy and easier to wind into a coil.

Ok, I think that happened to me. Let me try and rewick and make sure they are tight. Maybe I left it too loose thinking that the wick was going to expand and not wanting it to get too tight

That, and flame treating your kanthal or nichrome before wrapping the coil should help

There's a sweet spot for coil tightness, can't be too tight or it chokes the wick, can't be too loose or it gets too hot. For the Vivi, I coil around a fine threaded screw, then unscrew the screw from the coil. For cotton, I take a bit of my kanthal and twist it as tight as I can around the end of my cotton wick, than feed that through the coil and gently twist the coil onto the wick.

Yup, that's it. I had a couple issues where I put the center pin back in the bottom of the head, and it pushed the leg up while inserting it just enough where a portion of the coil wasn't being wetted by the wick, causing glowing of the coil in just that one spot.

Bourbonman and l7d4n,

You guys are awesome. That did it. I just rewicked 2 of them in less than 5 minutes. I used cotton on one, and regular wick that I got from clouds of vapor today (a complete ripoff at $1 a foot).

My coils were very loose. I mean a gap between them and the wick.

I used a needle and wrapped 5 wraps around. Made sure the part going down to the leg was tight and it's perfect. Oh, I did the flame thing, which I never knew of. I'm getting perfect vape at 2.6ohms which is right were I wanted to be. High enough to use o. My provari but low enough to get a decent vape on my volt x2.

Now that I know about it,I have a feeling that the funny taste was from not doing the flame trick on the wire. It tasted very chemically over burnt.

Thank you guys. At least now i don't have to feel like I wasted the money on this wire.

By the way, is there any reason I should use nicrome 80 over nicrome 60? Should I still look for kanthal or nicrome 80?

I'm glad we could help man.

The only difference between nichrome 60 and 80 is the iron content. 80 is 80% nickel 20% chromium (I think, can't remember, may be opposite), and 60 is like 64% nickel 16% iron 20% chromium, but again, i cant remember if its that ratio specifically. If you had a iron allergy, 80 may be better, but I've used both and they're equally resistant to popping from hot spots or getting weaker at bends once used and malleable.

So it's not like one is safer than the other as far as poisons or anything.

That's awesome! I'm very happy to be of help. It feels good to give back to the community that has given me so much.

I went with kanthal because it's supposed to handle higher temps and be a bit more durable. I have some 34 and some 36, I like to experiment with different resistances and number of wraps. Some folks swear by nichrome, some by kanthal, I say if you get a good vape with what you've got, you win! Some like Ford, some like Chevy, but if you already own a new Dodge that gets you to work in comfort, do you care? :)

Sorry, I get all philosophical on my day off. Prolly because it's drinking day! Yay! :toast:

Ok so just gave it a shot myself.

Decided to rewick one of the accompanying attys just to try it, but decided to use mesh instead.

So I grabbed some 350 mesh, made a wick, oxidised it, wrapped a five-wrap coil, and mounted everything.

Works like a charm. I cut the mesh wick so it just barely reaches the inner sides of the tank on either side.

Massive TH, massive flavor right off the bat. Had to mingle about with the coil two or three times, to get everything glowing evenly, but it really does work perfectly.

I'll highly recommend a meshed wick for a Vivi Nova, if anyone wants to try.

Bye Bye CE1,2,3,4..... err whatever. Hello Carto! Just as easy to fill as it was stock but no more hassle of the CE. And way better than a standard carto tank.
