I think the gunk is a combination of unburned juice and air pollution.
I make one side of the wick a lot longer than the other and every few days just pull it to a new spot in the coil.

Well, I went with the ss mesh first and it was ok. I wraped it 4 to 5 times and it was reading 1.5 ohms, I thought it would have been 2 to 2.5 ohms but anyway it had ok vapor and a little better taste. I also removed some burt thing that kept the wires from touching the metal?Then I went with the silica wick and much better, taste was great and vapor was WOW. How many times should I wrap the wick? 3,4,5 times????? Iam using 32 kanthal wire and looking to get around 2.0 to 2.5 ohms any help would be great!!
A 4/5 wrap reading 1.5 ohms sounds like you might have had a coil shorting out, especially with mediocre results.
If you are using variable voltage, I think your ohms are less important than your results. Different numbers of coils will give you a different vape at equivalent wattage. Play around, try one head with a 2/3 wrap, one with a 3/4, and one with a 4/5 and see which gives you the vape you prefer.
I have been saying this for two years now. the change of wraps changes the surface area of the coil and that changes the size of the vapor molecule. This is not the same as with dual coils because each coil has the same surface area. There is also something about our lungs too. I noticed that a buddy of mine (Lord Davon) could hit my PV and blow a ton of vapor on the exhale and I hardly get any. And without listing all of the things involved that were the same it has to be our lungs that were different.
In a nutshell, because we are all different and have different likes and dislikes, If we change any one thing we get a different taste/vapor production. We are closing in on being able to change everything about vapor production so that we all can individually fine tune the best vape for each one of us.
I never thought about respiratory system differences. I've tried the exact same setup I've seen in a review and not gotten the clouds of vapor the reviewer got. I figured all the reviewers just fake it and practice blowing mouth hits or something..including Lord Davon. (He's seems about the least impartial anymore, and easy to watch. Pbusardo just seems to be getting cranky these days, he either loves something or completely trashes it)
That is why I like 3ohms at 6v instead of 2 ohms at 4v, both 2 amps but the 3ohms has much more surface area and much thicker vaper. Have never liked low ohms, very harsh vaper confused with TH. Not to mention the danger of people not understanding battery drain using these low ohms.
That's an odd comparison. The amps seem irrelevant to me. You are basically saying you prefer 12W over 8W. With the 6V you like you have 50% more Power/watts. I'd expect more and thicker vaper.
The amount of coil wraps/surface area is not just dependent on the ohms you choose.
Both these atties are 1.5.
A stock Joye 1.5Ω atty would fall somewhere in between these as far as wraps.
Willy. that must be pretty thin wire to get 1.5 ohms from 11 wraps. Every coil I have ever made is 32g, bought 100' over a year ago and still have about half left. All my cheapo vv mods are limited to 2.5amps so the 32g works well for me at 2.5 to 3 ohms and 4.5 to 6v.
wow, there are endless way to improve the humble little Vivi. My head is spinning, so now that I know how well aquainted with the Vivis you guys are, I have a question. I love my vivi, get greate vapor, tastes great. I made the vent holes larger,i sanded the 510 connection threads, I shortend the silicone cap etc. Wondeful. I have just one little thing that is driving me crazy, maybe in a tad OCD. The center pin? that comes up from the bottom end cap that goes up to the atty where it attaches is off center. It then makes the atty off center also, so that when I screw the top of the tank , the silicone cap that makes the seal is off center also making the little hole get pushed so that the airflow is off. I dont want to push on it too hard,and break it. What I want to know is if I can take a pair of pliers and straighten the shaft so it will sit straight up. Im afraid to try it, I have a second nova tank coming. I was just wonder how sturdy that metal was and if anyone else has gotten an off center pin. Its the part that connects to the atty where you screw it on. Its just driving me nuts that when I screw on the cap and look down the little hole is off under the the hole.

These are my favorite as they're pure silicon, instead of being an unknown rubber material:
510 Threaded Connector Insulators - Avid Vaper
They're more resistant to breaking or snapping, as well.
EDIT: Not sure if they're compatible for the Vivi Nova, but I can check tonight when I get home from work. I have many of them.

Alright, I put the kiddos to sleep and was finally able to grab a picture:
I got the silicon insulator on there and it barely fits. It doesn't want to fit in the head at first, but once the bottom plug is in the head, it seems to be fully secure.
It does add about .5mm or so to the height of the head, so it may cause leaking issues due to an improper seal regarding the head and the tube.
If you want me to send you a couple BJ, shoot me your address and I'll stick them in a snail mail envelope and let you try them out without having to take a risk on them.
