Just posted this in general juice forum haha what an idiot...moving it here...

Got my Vivi Nova today. At first I kept getting a nasty burnt taste, so boiled all the heads, dryed em off, put the 2.8 ohm head on and viola! excellent vape! About two hours later I was putting away all my stuff and I noticed I never put the silicon cap back on (the one that seals the airway so it doesnt flood-right above the coil) Put it back on and now every other hit I get the burnt taste again. UGH. Anyway, would the cap have anything to do with this? I read somewhere it can choke the wick but that doesnt seem to be the case...the wick has plenty of room, and I also roll and tip it to wet the wick...isnt working.

There is also a piece (cotton?) around the outside of the coil (not wrapped around it...if you were looking down on it, it would look like this (|) ...the cotton being the () part and the coil being the |...

I have a suspicion that maybe the coil is burning the cotton...anyone shed some light on this?

What voltage are you vaping at? I have found the ViVi heads to be pretty forgiving. For 2.8 ohms (they tend to read low) I would be around 4-4.2 volts. Also, what kind of juice? Is it heavy VG?

Lastly, which ViVi did you get? Version 1 or 2? The version 2 heads have a kind of protective material down around the coil. I don't think the material is cotton. In the heads I've taken apart the material does color/burn a bit.

Hmm... I took off my cap and tried it.. nice vape but my tank filled with vapor! It scared me so I put the cap back on LOL. when I unscrewed the top cap, a cloud of vapor came out!

Many of us have found that the VN vapes better at lower voltage. The head I'm using now is the 2.9.. I'm vaping it at 4.2v. With a boge carto, I usually vape a 2.9 at 5v. I also think I ruined my first head when I tried to run it (right off the bat) at a voltage I was used to using with cartos. It didn't last very long or taste very good. This last head ( the 2.9) I started at super low voltage and worked my way up slowly and it's been going strong and tasting great for at least a week now with no cleaning.

As far as the cap choking the wick.. I've seen videos where people have cut notches in their silicon caps and widened the hole where the wicks come out on either side. I havent' tried to do any modding on mine since it's my only one and I don't want to mess it up. I have noticed that I get a much better vape if I hold the button on my device for a couple seconds, letting the coil heat the juice, before I take a draw.

I had one head that did that (gave a burned taste). I replaced it with another head and it has been perfect ever since.

I saved the old head because I want to re-wick and re-coil it if I ever get time and figure out how to do it.

Also, make sure you have properly mounted the silicon cap and the little washer that goes inside of it. The little washer has a cone shaped side. That side goes up towards the drip tip. I'm not sure if getting that washer upside down would affect the taste or not, but I assume it is installed that way at the factory for a reason.

would it be advisable to remove the protective material around the coil?

There would be no harm in removing that protective material although that may not be the problem. I have made my own coils around cotton wicking material and removed that protective material. I am not sure what it's used for but I have never had any problems using the Vivi without it being there.

I have found that keeping mine at a lower voltage seems to handle a burning taste from one of the heads I was using. Sometimes I can boost it up to 4.5V but after a little while it starts tasting burnt. I take the voltage down to 4.1 and it tastes fine and vapes just as good as it did at 4.5V.

There are some that feel the rubber grommet at the bottom of the head may be causing the burnt taste. The coil runs down the inside of that head and one of the ends lays against that rubber grommet. It could be that is the problem but I haven't experimented enough yet with the fixes for that to give a good opinion. That gets a bit technical on how to fix though.

I have several heads I rebuild frequently and have not seen any evidence in burning on the rubber grommet. Only a very slight discoloration at worst. Nor have I ever tasted any burnt flavor (close a couple times that were my fault while learning). I found very early on that the Vivi Nova is very unlike carto's in that it is happiest with a LOT lower voltage. I've seen many reports here from people complaining of burnt flavor that just won't vape a voltages a lot lower than they used with carto's. As they say, you can lead a horse to water....

^^What Flyer said^^

If you are getting a burnt taste .... turn the voltage down

I see where Altsmoke has some 4ohm heads for those that insist that they must vape at a higher voltage.

Vaping at higher voltage is such a misunderstood myth...IMHO.... a 4ohm head at 6 volts makes someone feel special? No different then a 2.4 ohm head at 4 volts... but I guess doing 6 volts make people feel special or something...

/rant off

anyways, with the v2.5 heads I just pull the little cloth insulator out before I even use the heads, then I use em until there done and rebuild. Only bad thing is that if you pay attention, when you pull apart the original coil, you'll see that there are tiny non resistant leads on the feet of the coil, which unless your a microsurgeon is impossible to re-create when rebuilding the heads, which can lead to burning the rubber grommet at the bottom.

I would love to pictures of this. I've been rebuilding the Vivi Nova heads for over a couple months now (rotating among 12 heads) and have never seen anything but one continuous piece of resistance wire used. I do the same when I recoil.

I got in my premade coils and was able to get one installed and working! (yah me!) But I'm not getting any flavor :(

What wick did you use Donnah? What resistance was your new coil? I was using cotton crochet thread and recently have been using bamboo yarn. I like them both a lot.
