Voltage drop... I know what it is, but why is it important to consider?

Here's a little something for the OP to consider ... If you vary resistance by coil length, the longer coil will take longer to heat up. So you are going to be running the load on the battery longer, which has its own safety considerations. True it will be a lesser load, I don't know if that mitigates the longer dwell. I guess like everything, "it depends" haha

I just found this, might be pretty cool and useful.

I think Ra would be the mod/battery resistance and Rb would be coil resistance. Vin would be the unloaded battery voltage and Vout is the voltage your coil sees. I think you have to assume that your battery is an ideal voltage source though, so it won't be right on. Same thing with measuring actual mod/battery resistance, which is tough with a normal DMM if you have less than 3 arms.
