Yes you can! Don't bother calling the national USPS customer line, those guys just toe the company line. Call your branch and explain it to them. I did, and mine was happy to accommodate. I'll be picking mine up from the PO on the way home from work today!
USPS still has my VV in New York.
At least another week of waiting for me, before it goes on the 'big silver bird', over the pond, through Customs and I pay the charges.

YAY!!! If mine doesn't show up with the mail I'll run up to the post office and see if I can beg the packages out of them. It's a small town. They only have one shelving unit for packages. Shouldn't be too much of a bother for them.
I wish we could do that here in Canada. People have tried to see if they could pick it up from the sorting station and were denied at every turn.
Good news is mine is on Canadian soil (released by Canada customs) and waiting for Canada Post.
If I am lucky they will deliver tomorrow.
Bad part of that is I will be at work, but should be able to pick it up after work. This way I will have it for the weekend.
Knowing my luck they wont attempt delivery until Monday
EDIT: FYI no we don't have delivery on Saturdays incase you were thinking that was an option
