Hi everyone,
My Dad is 49 and has been smoking 38 years (started at 11!!!) and he has recently expressed interest in switching to vaping. The trouble is that it is too expensive for him (he is pretty down on his luck) because currently he is part of a family that splits the cost of buying tobacco and rolling the cigarettes. So he's not out more than $30 a month or so. Currently he smokes about a pack or pack and a half a day. He also gets the cheapest pipe tobacco that he can. From the smell of it, it's more of a sweet smell (as if any tobacco smell is really sweet lol) compared to some traditional cigs.

So I am trying to learn all that I can. I would like to help him out and get him his first e-cig kit and hopefully some refillable cartridges. The ones I'm most interested now, at a price point I can handle, are the Mistic brand. Currently I can get their starter kit for about 8 bucks and I figure that's a reasonable way to get him started.

With that said, here are my questions:
What is the least inexpensive, but also not too tedious/involved way to use e-cigs?
Is the Mistic brand refillable? I know some people do DIY juices and that juices are able to be bought, and I feel that'd be the cheapest way for him to switch.
If they're not refillable, are the cartridges interchangeable with some refillable cartridges from another brand?
He takes very short puffs as it is now, no long draws or anything, so with that in mind how long would each cartridge last?
What other information might be helpful for me in helping him? I am willing to learn whatever so that I can teach him. I know he would be very open to that and we talk openly about smoking all the time. He has one small e-cig that he used a few times and he likes it, but it's just a simple disposable one and he uses it sparingly since he can't afford to refill. That has given me confidence that he probably will take well to e-cigs in general, if there is an affordable way to do it.

My mom also has severe asthma and allergies and while I know I shouldn't be "enabling" him, I want to enable him and our family to get healthier by switching to vaping. He is most addicted to the visual of the smoke and the feel of having something in his hand. He has actually gone many hours without a cig and is fine, as long as he has something to do. His cravings aren't bad or anything. So I feel that even a low nicotine percentage/mg would go over ok with him. While I don't expect him to fully switch over right away, I want to get the ball rolling.

If you don't recommend Mistic, what is a brand you can recommend that is reasonably priced?

Thank you all so much! I'm sure this isn't the usual post here but I saw that you guys seem pretty active and kind so I thought I'd give it a shot! Thank you!

Hi, welcome to the forum, glad you are looking after your dad. Anything I tell you about a starter kit would be second knowledge, but you should have many replies shortly. Generally anything that can be purchased in a national retail store, is owned by big tobacco and they don't have your best interest at heart when it cames to vaping and quitting smoking.

Hello and welcome

I think you are a good daughter to help your dad..But his best chance of success is not a cheap $8.00 pen style as they tend to be unreliable and taste terrible. If the goal is to get him to eventually switch over to vaping then he is better off by buying something he can grow with and a tank that has coils he can change when they get used up. You can get a kit for somewhere around $50.00 but it depends on what style he is comfortable with. Most smokers tend to want their ecig it to look, act and smoke like a cigarette. But vaping is not smoking as there is nothing that burns. It is harm reduction and a way to curb those nicotine cravings so you don't want to smoke.

We need to know a little more info from him like what type of smokes he uses to help determine a suitable nic level. I know you said roll your own, but do you know what level of nic is in them? For these purposes we can use light, med, a lot)lol).

Others will chime in so you are about to be overwhelmed with suggestions. Don't hurry. This is too important for your dad to rush.

:)

Thanks guys :) Eagerly awaiting the suggestions. I don't mind being overwhelmed. I do good research and I can also talk with my dad about this, eventually. I don't want him to know yet that I'm doing the research, because I don't want to overwhelm him. So I want to have some set options in place for starters. Since he's used a cheap e-cig before and liked it just fine, I think he'll be comfortable with just about any e-cig. I will see if I can find out his nicotine percentage/mg but I'm not sure that he'd know that since he just buys the tobacco from a local guy for real cheap. But I'll see what I can find out.

I definitely won't hurry! He's been doing this for so long, that a little bit more time isn't going to matter that much. Currently his health is OK enough, although he has chronic sinus issues that I know would get better once he quit real cigs and got past that horrible stage of getting it out of his system. I really want him to be around forever because he's a great dad, so naturally I worry.

He's actually wished that there was a "healthy" e-cig as he says lol...one that just blows a vapor without all the harmful effects or the addiction. I did tell him there are different levels of nicotine and he could work his way down. But again...expensive! So I have to figure out where exactly to start, to help him out.

Just making the switch to ecigs and stopping smoking will improve his overall health greatly. It did mine and I smoked longer than your dad and was a very heavy smoker.
Try looking at these sites. you may need to google them to find url(not sure if they are still here on ecf).
Halo---great cig-a-likes but a little on the expensive side
Vapor4life- good cig-a-likes with prefilled cartridges.

Let me see if they still have a showing here....brb and will put into a new post.

Look around in the area you live and check for vape stores. Take you dad, and he can see whats available at that store and he can get some first hand knowledge from the staff and other vapers. You can get a good starter kit for under $30, don't spend much more than that, cause he will take to it or not. If he sticks with it, most quickly upgrade after they gained some experience and have an idea of what they are looking for. Matched with the right equipment and eliquid level most can quit smoking in a few days to a couple of weeks.

Thank you everyone, I will look into everything you throw my way! I should have mentioned that I don't live near him, so whatever I get him will have to be sent to him. There are no local vape shops where I live. There is one where he lives, but I don't know if he's ever been to it or if I could convince him to check it out. He likes to stay under the radar with his smoking habit. I just want him to be healthier and also for my mom's and little brother's health to get better!

She probably can get a great kit at that price online, not so sure about a shop tho. If she looks at a few in person, maybe she can find them online cheaper.

I am at their site now. The sale is pretty tempting. Can you tell me the difference between automatic and manual battery?

I am looking at this kit: https://www.vapor4life.com/vapor-cigarettes/vapor-king-ash-cap-standard-e-cig-kit/

I know he's going to want something that's more traditional cig shape and something that has good vapor. I am encouraged to hear of those who've switched from regular cigarettes to e-cigs. I'm always hoping something will happen. I recognize that it's a hard habit to kick so I want to support him in any way I can.

Oh, right, I'm a new member lol...

This is the name of the kit I'm looking at:
Vapor King Ash Cap Standard E Cig Kit
Let me look hold on.

Your dad will be happy with a manual. The difference in the 2 is one you hit the switch when you want to vape. The automatic has problems and don't last very long.

Hi and welcome. I won't comment on the cig-a-likes as I discovered years ago I don't like them much, and I don't want to discourage things. But the difference between an automatic and manual battery is simple: with a manual, you have to push a button to get vapor. With an auto, one just inhales through the device. A reed switch inside senses the air flow and turns the battery on.

Looks ok for what you are saying you want to get him. They are out of stock on the x-long ones but the reg looks ok. They will ask you at what strength of nic do you want for the cartridges. Normal is 1.8 which we write here as 18mg. Good starting place.
These are rechargeable. Don't know if they will last him all day before he has to recharge. That will depend on how often he uses it. With the discounts you maybe could get him 2 so one could be charging while he uses the other one? We do usually recommend to have at least 2 batteries so if one runs out of a charge or breaks, he has something to use instead on running to the store for a pack of smokes. Nothing is more defeating than to go for a few weeks smoke free and then find themselves in a crisis mode because of something breaking.

Cool! I'll think on it. I can't spend TOO much right now but I'll see what I can do. I don't want to rush into it either but I have looked on that site a few times and it's been among my top 5 or so so I'm familiar with it at least.

Not to sound dumb, but if he got some blank cartridges (supposing he decided he decided to go all in), he could use potentially any vape juice in them right?

I think he'd be totally fine at the 1.8%. Is that flavor (the traditional tobacco) an ok flavor to start with?

Do they sell blank cartridges? If so, then yes, he could put any juice he wants. But not just any old cartridge will fit on these(I don't think). As long as they are selling blank ones then it will be ok. Traditional tobacco is a good place to start.

When you decide and what you decide, pls let us know how it is going. Wishing your dad all the best.

Thank you! You guys have been even greater than I thought you'd be :)

So I think I'll just get one for now because I checked my bank account and can't really dole out that much in one fell swoop, especially when I don't know if he'll like it or not. Thankfully sales happen often at that site (I've seen one every time I've been there lol) so I'm confident if it comes to it, I will be able to get some on sale again.

Yes they do have blank cartridges right there on the site. I think it's something like $11 for 5 of them, or $45 for 25 of them. Do the refillables not last that long? What's the difference between low resistance and high resistance? They sell both blanks, but I don't know the difference between the two.

The difference between Auto and Manual on ecig battery if nobody answered you question is:

Automatic the battery turns on when you take a drag off the ecig
Manual means you have to push a button to fire while taking a drag

Good luck on your search.
