I don't know that this has anything to do with the issue but I quit using my xtar Vp1 because of the indentations it was causing in my batteries. I went back to my tried and true Pila charger. Like I said, this is probably totally unrelated to your problem but...just my 2 cents worth.
I found early on I had some indentations in the battery. So I started holding the battery and letting the slide slowly close up to the top. the indentation comes from letting the spring slam the battery against the top post, it does not happen from just the pressure while charging. None of the new batteries that I have been charging for months have indentations.

My vtc5's are longer than the aw's and they are a tight fit in the REO. I won't be using the vtc5's anymore. From what I've read everyone likes them and they're not having any issues with them. I only have 2 of and I really like them but they both have pitting and get warm when vaping.

Real VTC5's are EXACTLY the same length as the AW 1600 mah .........

Me thinks you might have counterfeit Sonys there :(

I'd be throwing some electrical tape over the terminals and dropping them in the recycle box at Staples if it were me!

Clean the mod and use noalox or deoxit keep checking the batteries . Not sure if it was mentioned but I would check and make sure your spring screw is tight ,

Your more then welcome to send the mod to me I would be happy to go through the unit

This is one more reason I'm glad I bought a Reo.

My first thought was maybe the Sony's were counterfeit but if the AW's are heating up too...?

I'm in agreement with @Rule62 about preferring button tops over flat tops in the Reo. They make for shorter button throw, generally less arcing (at least what I've noticed, I could be off of my horse factually though), and no pitting issues or indentation/denting do to chargers with feisty springs. In other words, less of a headache.

Cheers

Immediately after noticing the pitting on the bottom of one of my VTC5s, I ran down to the local B&M and picked up 3 purple Efest 2100s. They were the only button tops they had in stock. But I like to have lots of batteries in rotation, so I ordered a few AW1600s from RTD. I still have a couple AW1600s that are a couple years old, but are still charging well on my Xtar VP1.

I noticed the same thing years ago and started taking a little more time putting my batteries in the charger

My Grand was getting warm while vaping recently, turns out I was pushing the RDA too hard with coils that were very badly gunked up. Was drawing hard on the battery trying to get the performance I was used to I guess.

Cleaned and rebuilt, no problems since and I almost always run the VTC4s and 5s. Never thought to check the spring and screw though I did give the Grand a good cleaning too.

My VTC4 got hot yesterday but I know it's because of the coils. I installed some more stove top coils I wrapped last night, and the dual coil setup is at .36 ohms. If I take a big pull I'll start to feel the box getting a little warm in my hand.

That's because you're running a circular particle accelerator in your setup. Honestly, it looks like you could split atoms with those coils.
