Old, unused accounts are auto set to inactive after a time, to prevent misuse. It's easy enough to get it reactivated.

Any problems just open a ticket: ECF Support

That's odd...I go years at a time not logging in and I haven't had an issue with my account staying active.

I'm not sure what you mean since you first seem to imply something was "reset" and then that your account disappeared.

Password changes on a regular basis are mandatory, so if you tried to log in after being away for a year you would have been met with a required password change.

If you think you know what your original user name was you should fill out the form Roly pointed to and ask about it. Having multiple accounts open - even if one of them is inactive - pointing to the same computer can result in them all getting automatically shut down.
